2014 Canada-Africa Research Exchange Grants program.

The Canada-Africa Research Exchange Grants program supports short-term exchanges between Canadian and African universities and research institutes that address IDRC research themes. As well as joint research activities, the program also provides some support to activities aimed at improving student training at the graduate level.

Eligibility:

Applicants from Canada and the following African countries: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Applications that do not meet the following criteria will not be forwarded to the committee:

• The project must involve at least one lead researcher from Africa and one from Canada.

• In order to be eligible for a grant, the lead Canadian project researchers must:
o be regular, full-time faculty members (occupying positions below the dean; emeritus  professors are not eligible) at an AUCC member university who are actively engaged in the  scientific or pedagogical life of their university OR be regular, full-time researchers at an  affiliated institution of an AUCC member university such as a hospital or a research  institute; and
o have completed a doctorate degree in their field of expertise at least five years prior to the
submission of the CAREG application.

Note that only the lead Canadian project researchers may travel as part of the CAREG grant.

• In order to be eligible for a grant, the lead African project researchers must:
o be regular, full-time faculty members (occupying positions below the dean; emeritus  professors are not eligible) at a recognized and established university in one of the eligible

Support: 

Support through this program will be cost-shared on a 2:1 ratio by the program and the partner institutions, respectively. The maximum value of each grant will be $40,000 Cdn.

The IDRC funds will cover:
o International airfares (the most direct and economical routing).
o Local accommodation and per-diems for meals and incidental expenses (using IDRC travel  rates as a maximum and lower rates for travel of three months or more).
o Other travel expenses including visas, medical insurance, immunization and ground  transportation.
o Personnel costs (a maximum of 25% of the IDRC grant) to cover the payment of  replacement salaries when the African and Canadian researchers are abroad (i.e. to release  CAREG researchers from teaching commitments) or for the payment of core salaries of  lead CAREG researchers, including benefits.

  • Equipment purchases (a maximum of 10% of the IDRC grant). Equipment purchased by  either the African or Canadian researcher must be left with the African partner institution.
  •  Research expenses including remuneration for research assistants, resources for the research  (e.g. journals, data) as well as computer and laboratory services.

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURES AND DEADLINE

Researchers may submit their application to AUCC in English or French. Their application must
include the following:

• The eligibility checklist.

• General project information, including a summary of the proposed project.

• A narrative description of the proposed activities that addresses all points outlined in the
application form, not exceeding nine pages.

• A signed budget summary with budget notes as per the application form.

• A one-page letter of support signed by the director, dean or head of department from the
Canadian institution(s).
