2015 Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition for Young Writers from Commonwealth Nations(Win an All Expense Paid trip to London)

Run by the Royal Commonwealth Society since 1883, the Commonwealth Essay Competition is the world’s oldest and largest schools’ international writing competition. It provides a platform for young people to compete with their peers in a truly global environment.

The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2015, run in partnership with Cambridge University Press, closes for entries on 1st May.

The Royal Commonwealth Society is inviting young people to share their hopes and concerns for the future, thereby generating an important youth perspective and Commonwealth wide dialogue as the international community gathers to set development goals for the next 15 years.

This year’s theme, ‘A Young Commonwealth’, recognises that young people account for the majority of the Commonwealth’s population and play a vital role in shaping the world that we live in, now and in years to come.

Requirements:

  • To enter the competition, you must be living in, or a national of, a Commonwealth country or territory
  • The Competition is open to nationals or residents of all Commonwealth countries and territories. Note: Special dispensation applies to entrants from Hong Kong, Fiji and Zimbabwe who are entitled to enter the Competition.
  • Entrants must select a Senior or Junior topic depending on their age on 1st May 2015.
  • Only one essay per entrant is allowed. Once an essay is submitted, students/teachers will not have the opportunity to revise it.
  • Entries must be written in English.
  • The maximum word counts are 1500 words for Senior entries and 750 words for Junior entries. These word limits apply to all topics and all formats (essay, poem, letter, etc). Exceeding the word count will result in automatic disqualification.
  • Essays can only be uploaded in either word doc. or pdf format.

JUNIOR CATEGORY : Born after 1st May 2001 (under 14 years)
1 What are the advantages and disadvantages of being young?
2 Imagine what the world will be like when you are an old person.
3 I am the future!
4 Imagine you are a young person living in a different part of the Commonwealth. What is life like for you?
SENIOR CATEGORY : Born between 2nd May 1996 and 1st May 2001 (14-18 years)
1 What do you hope to achieve in your lifetime?
2 In 2030 you will no longer be young. What changes would you like to see in the world in 15 years’ time?
3 Youth versus experience.
4 Fresh perspectives. What can a young Commonwealth offer?
AWARDS
  • There will be a Winner and Runner- up in each category.
  • Winners will be flown to London for a week of cultural and educational visits, culminating in a special award event in November 2015.
  • Runners-up will be recognised in national award events.
  • All four top entries will be published by the RCS.
  • A number of Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards will be made in both the Junior and Senior categories, and participants who do not receive an award will be entitled to a certificate of participation

Entries should be submitted online for the 2015 competition. However, offline submissions will be accepted where secure internet connection is an issue.
