Strathmore Business School has launched the second edition of the Safaricom Business Journalism Fellowship, an eight month, mid-career program that gives business journalists the opportunity to train alongside Kenya’s leading business lecturers and some of the top corporate newsmakers in the region.
Eligibility Requirements
- The Fellowship Program is open to full-time editorial employees of newspapers, magazines and broadcast news organisations and freelance journalists.
- Applicants must have at least four years’ experience. Though some attempt is made to achieve a diversity of backgrounds, the affiliation of applicants is not a factor in the selection process.
- Journalists from nationally known organisations will not be given preference over those from smaller regional media.
- The chief criterion for selection is demonstrated journalistic excellence. While essays and letters of recommendation are important parts of the application, the greatest weight is given to work samples.
The Fellowship Program will be an experiential learning and mentoring program. It will comprise of three components as follows
- A four day module that will be in 3 phases
- 9 intensive half day workshops spread over 9 months (one Saturday morning a month)
- 9 Guest Speaker dinner events also spread over 9 months
Modules
The curriculum will be divided into modules whereby each module will be four days of intense training. Specifically, it will cover
- Economic Analysis: Understanding, analysing and interpretation of economic data
- Financial Analysis: Understanding, analysing and interpreting financial reports
- Economic and Financial: Writing, Translating data and analysis to stories
The Programme
The highly competitive course will admit 15 of the most promising applicants.
- The successful applicants will be taken through three modules, with each module requiring four days of intensive training with some of the most respected minds in the business world.
- The experiential learning and mentoring programme will also include half-day workshops spread over eight months as well as exclusive guest speaker dinner events where the journalists will enjoy opportunities to learn from and network with mentors and business leaders.
- The fellowship programme focusses on financial reporting, and will this year cover topics including: economic analysis, business strategy and financial analysis, big data and cyber security.
- During the eight month duration of the programme the journalists will be expected to finish a 30-hour credit course before they can graduate.
Application Procedure
Submit a completed application form along with:
- A professional resume
- An essay- less than 1,000 words on a business or economic trend
- Four original samples of work produced during the last five years
- College or university transcript(s)
- Three letters of reference from persons in a position to comment on your professional performance and potential for covering business and economic news
The program permits fellows to make whatever arrangements are deemed appropriate. Though applicants’ employers, except under unusual circumstances, should submit a letter supporting the application, applicants are not required to obtain formal employer approval.
All materials, including letters of reference, college transcripts, essays and work samples, should be compiled and submitted with a completed application form before or on the 15th August 2015, to:
