2015/2016 French Embassy SAFeThink scholarship programme for study in France

Applications now open: the French Embassy offers scholarships for students from South African and Lesotho who wish to do a Master’s degree or a PhD in France.

Students who wish to complete a Master’s degree in political or social sciences (international relations, public affairs, security studies, conflict studies, human rights/ humanitarian law, development studies,…) are requested to apply for the French Embassy SAFeThink scholarship programme, that is run in cooperation with five South African think tanks (AISA, IGD, ISS, MISTRA and SAIIA)

The French government is pleased to launch the 2015-2016 edition of the SAFe Think Programme. The SAFe Think scholarship programme supports exceptional students wishing to undertake a Master’s degree at a higher education institution in France. It addresses students in the following fields of study: political sciences, international relations, sociology, public affairs, security studies, conflict studies, human rights/humanitarian law, development studies.

The SAFe Think programme was launched in 2010 with the aim of strengthening the connections between South African academic institutes and Think Tanks and their French counterparts, specifically in the fields of Human and Social Sciences. By assisting research partners in establishing sustainable cooperation, the French government aims at facilitating the integration of South African research and policy-oriented institutions into French, European and francophone African scientific networks.

Application

SAFeThink is run by the Embassy of France in South Africa in cooperation with five South African think tanks. Applications for the programme should be filed through one of the partners:

Am I eligible for a bursary?
You can be considered for a bursary if:
1 – Your field of study is in political or social sciences (international relations, sociology, public administration, peace and security, conflict
studies)
2 – You are a citizen of South Africa or Lesotho. Unfortunately, temporary/ permanent residents and candidates from other African
countries cannot be considered.
3 – You hold or are in the process of completing a Bachelor’s or Honour’s degree. The degree has to be completed by September
2015.
4 – You have applied to at least 2 French universities and Master programmes. Should you be awarded a SAFeThink scholarship, you
will need to provide your university admission letter by June 16 2015 – otherwise the scholarship offer will be withdrawn.

The Master Programme funds outstanding students wishing to undertake a Master’s degree at a French Higher Education Institution. Between 2010 and 2014, it has allowed 22 students from South African universities to complete their studies in France and to obtain an internationally recognized Master’s degree. The Master bursaries cover tuition fees, living costs, a roundtrip flight ticket, visa fees and full medical and social insurance.

The Research Programme allows PhD students and researchers to undertake a joint research project in France. Through its fellowship scheme, 4 South African senior researchers conducted joint projects with French research institutes between 2010 and 2014.
Applications are accepted throughout the year, but should be submitted at least 2 months before the envisioned departure for France.
