The New Zealand Aid Programme offers scholarships to people from eligible African countries who are motivated to make a difference at home.
In 2016 New Zealand Development Scholarships applications can be made online from 1st February 2016. Applications close on 30th April 2016. Any eligible country can apply online.
Qualification types
New Zealand Development Scholarships are available for the following qualifications:
- Postgraduate Certificate (6 months)
- Postgraduate Diploma (1 year)
- Masters Degree (1 – 2 years)
- PhD (up to 3.5 years)
Eligibility
Candidates must meet all the scholarship eligibility criteria including:
- Be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of commencing your scholarship.
- Be a citizen of the country from which you are applying for a scholarship and have resided in that country for at least the last two years.
- Agree to return to your home country for a minimum of two years on completion of the scholarship.
Eligible countries in Africa include: Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
Preferences
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate strong academic ability, leadership qualities, and a commitment to the development of their home country.
Preference is also given to candidates who are 39 years of age or younger at the time of commencing their scholarship.
Preference will be given to candidates who apply to study in academic disciplines relating to one or more of the following:
Agriculture development
- Agri-business management, agricultural economics, agricultural systems and management, rural development, domestic supply chains and distribution, Natural Resource and Environmental Management
- Biology, vegetable production, livestock/animal husbandry, crop management, sericulture (silk production), forestry, fisheries, aquaculture, agricultural pest management
- Phytosanitary, bio-security, biotechnology, agricultural trade,
- Food production, food sciences/technology, post-harvest processing, food storage and packaging, food safety

Renewable energy
- Geothermal, solar, hydro engineering and wind energy, renewable energy distribution systems

Scholarship Worth:
- Economy class air ticket for me by the most direct and economical air travel route between an international airport in my home country nominated by MFAT and an airport in New Zealand close to the Education Institution
- Airport reception and accommodation on arrival;
- Establishment allowance;
- A stipend to meet basic living expenses for the duration of my scholarship;
- Full cost of tuition fees including compulsory enrolment, orientation and student union fees (course-related costs are excluded);
- A return, standard economy class air ticket if I am eligible for reunion travel or home leave entitlements (as determined by MFAT)

insurance which includes health care and travel cover;

For PhD awardees and Masters awardees where research comprises 120 credits or more of the Masters programme and as authorised by MFAT; a research and thesis allowance, and provision for overseas fieldwork travel to the home country; and
- At the completion of my scholarship, an economy class air ticket f
or me by the most direct and economical air travel route from the international airport closest to my Education Institution to an international airport in my home country.

Step Three: Apply
If you are applying for a New Zealand Pacific Scholarship, New Zealand Development Scholarship, New Zealand ASEAN Scholarship and/or a New Zealand Regional Development Scholarship, please pick up an application form from the New Zealand High Commission or Embassy in your country.
Please submit your application to your nearest New Zealand Embassy or High Commission so that it arrives by the final closing date of 15 April 2016.
Documentation required
If you are successful in reaching the shortlist, you will be required to provide the following official documentation:
- One of the following:
- Verified copy of passport
- Verified copy of birth certificate
- Verified copy of other official government issued ID
- Verified copies of relevant academic transcripts
- Verified copies of relevant completion certificates
- Contact details of most recent employer + two most relevant other employers – does not apply to School Leaver applicants
- A non-verified copy of an IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) which will be verified by MFAT online using the TRF Verification Service OR an original copy of a TOEFL test result form. Whichever is provided must have been completed in the last 24 months.
Also at the shortlist stage, you may be required to undertake aptitude testing. You will be notified if this applies to you.
