The Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) is South Africa’s national Society of Composers, Lyricists and Music Publishers. SAMRO administers the performing and broadcasting rights in musical works in copyright, as well as public performances of sound recordings (commonly referred to as needle time rights for performers)
SAMRO Overseas Scholarships to enable talented young South Africans to further their music studies abroad. These awards rotate over a four-year cycle:
- 2016 Instrumentalists
- 2017 Keyboard Players
- 2018 Composers
- 2019 Instrumentalists
Two main awards, one for Jazz and one for Western Art Music, are available in each cycle
The 2016 competition will take place in the week of 15 – 20 August at the Linder Auditorium in Johannesburg. Rehearsals for the semi-finalists will run from 15 – 17 August followed by the Semi-final round on the 18th and the Final Round on Saturday 20 August 2016. Music students and young professionals aged 32 and younger are eligible to apply.
Eligibility Requirements:
- The age limit is 32 years. Applicants must have been born on or after 16 May 1983.
- The competition is open to instrumentalists who are citizens of South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho or Swaziland.
Benefits:
- The value of the main award in each genre is R200,000. The main scholarship winners’ awards may be used only for post-graduate study or master classes abroad, focussing on advancing their instrumental performance skills.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
1. Complete the Application Form (available in editable pdf format). No hand-written application forms will be accepted.
2. In addition, the following documents must be submitted via e-mail:
a. A brief Curriculum Vitae with details of your performing experience
b. A brief biography of no more than one hundred words, suitable for inclusion in the competition programme or publicity material
c. Most recent academic record (university transcript)
d. A description of plans for further study or master classes abroad and envisaged
career path (max 300 words)
e. Details of any other current study awards and bursaries
3. Applications must be accompanied by
a. A recent high resolution colour digital photo ( head and shoulders only) scanned at
300 dpi
b. A certified copy of the candidate’s valid identity document as proof of age and citizenship
c. Two current testimonials regarding the candidate’s instrumental abilities from
the candidate’s–
i. most recent instrumental teacher
ii. any other competent and recognised musical authority to whom the candidate’s instrumental abilities are known
d. Submission of a professional-quality live audio recording in digital format (MP3
or MP4) of 3 works (recorded at minimum 16 bit stereo, 44.1 kHz)- compiled in terms of the repertoire and performance guidelines.
