African Leadership Unleashed (Non-Traditional University for Africans with Fully Funded Scholarship): Apply Now.

Application Deadline: December 1st 2014

African Leadership Unleashed was founded by Fred Swaniker, a world-renowned champion for Africa’s youth. Building on his success in launching African Leadership Academy, he was inspired to launch African Leadership Unleashed as a way to bring the most innovative tertiary education in the world to Africa, and in so doing, help unleash Africa’s true potential as a continent.

African Leadership Unleashed is not a traditional university. Universities should give students the critical skills necessary for making a living and to make a life. Instead, hundreds of thousands of university graduates on the continent are unemployed. ALU provides the skills and the leadership experience necessary to succeed in any career or to create your own career as an entrepreneur.

Over the next 10 years, ALU will open 25 campuses in major cities across Africa. Our first campus, which opens in September 2015, is on the beautiful island of Mauritius.

ALU is a brand new network of 25 tertiary institutions that will have 10,000 students each, located next to major cities in Africa.  Over a 50-year period, these 25 campuses will create millions of the world’s best-educated tertiary graduates in Africa.  The first campus will be on the beautiful island of Mauritius, and will include ALA graduates in its first cohort.

Like ALA graduates, ALU students will receive placements in top organizations in Africa and around the world. For its first class of students, 100% will be eligible for full sponsorship from ALU’s corporate partners, meaning their world-class education will be free.

ALU is not traditional university and so we are not looking for traditional students.

  • ALU is  looking for young people who are willing to step out of the status quo into something far more transformational.
  • Students who apply to ALU must be dynamic and open to new experiences. They must be thrilled at the prospect of learning in an innovative way.

Fees and Scholarships

Option 1: Full Corporate Scholarship.

100% of the inaugural class will be eligible for a full scholarship sponsored by a leading organization operating in Africa. The full scholarship includes:

  • Airfare to and from your country of origin
  • Learning tools, including a laptop and a tablet
  • A stipend (“pocket money”)
  • Tuition
  • Food and accommodation on campus

As a condition of this scholarship, you have to participate in an internship with your sponsoring company for 4 months of every year. Should you perform well during your internship, your company has the ‘first right’ to hire you upon graduation. Should the company make you a full-time offer, you will most likely have to work with the company for approximately 3 years. This translates to roughly 1 year of placement for every year of sponsorship you receive. By taking this option, you will:

  • Guarantee yourself 100% free tertiary education
  • Guarantee at least 1 year of cumulative work experience with one of the most outstanding companies not just in Africa, but in the world.
  • Gain a very high chance of full-time employment after graduation (if you perform well during your internships).

Option 2: Fee-paying.

As a fee-paying student, you will also participate in an internship for 4 months of every year. Your internships will likely be with different companies every year, in different geographies. This translates to roughly one year of placement in 3 different settings. Should you perform well during your internships, you will have likely receive multiple full-time offers with your internship companies or with any other organization recruiting on-campus. By taking this option, you will:

  • Guarantee yourself at least one year of cumulative work experience
  • Guarantee yourself exposure with up to three different outstanding companies, not just in Africa, but in the world
  • Have potentially multiple job options if you perform well in internships
  • Be a “free-agent” at graduation, with no commitments to join anyone and the freedom to choose your career path without having to lock yourself to any employer for any duration of time
