Have you set up or are you thinking of setting up a new platform that publishes or brings new audiences to African literature? Would you like to exchange ideas and practical advice on how to successfully position and sustain a non-profit or for-profit literary or cultural initiative? This four-day workshop is designed to build a community of African aspiring, early career and established literary activists and arts managers. It provides an opportunity to share experiences, network with colleagues from across the continent and beyond, as well as join a community of activists for and promoters of African Literature.
A collaboration between the Centre for African Cultural Excellence (CACE) and the University of Bristol, last year the workshop brought 40 literary entrepreneurs from 12 African countries. This second edition will again combine academic, practical and activist approaches, with each day focusing on the context and conception of a different kind of literary initiative:
- Producing a festival (Thursday 17 August)
- Running an online magazine (Friday 18 August)
- Curating a regular literary or spoken word event (Saturday 19 August)
- Moving literature across media (Sunday 20 August)
Relevant media analyses and critical reading will be circulated in advance and discussed in each session. Across the four days there will be presentations from successful practitioners, opportunities for Q&A sessions with established literary activists, as well as time to discuss and develop your own ideas and plans. The workshop will be run in English, but we very much encourage applicants working in other languages and want to facilitate translation and exchange across languages through the workshop.
Following the workshop, participants will also have the opportunity to apply for the Writivism Arts Management and Literary Activism Mentoring Programme. This year-long mentorship offers two early career literary entrepreneurs who have attended the workshop a space to further share and develop ideas and project plans. All successful applicants will join a new network of African literary activists hosted by the Centre for African Cultural Excellence.
Logistics
- There is no fee for attending but successful applicants will be responsible for funding their own travel, meals and accommodation.
- A subsidised rate can be paid to CACE to provide accommodation and breakfast.

Selection Criteria
- Successful applicants will receive confirmation by Friday 7 July 2017 and are expected to be present for the full duration of the workshop as the conversations and skills developed will be interlinked.
