Ericsson Application Awards 2013 – an opportunity for developers to gain exposure within the telecom world, a chance to reach out to customers via Ericsson distribution channels and a chance to win €25,000 in prize money.

Who can join the competition

The competition is global and open to both students and small & medium sized enterprises (< 100 employees). There are two categories: one for students and one for companies. For more details see Rules and Terms & Conditions.

Theme

The purpose of the theme “Apps for City Life” is to promote innovations towards the Networked Society by connecting people, things and places to empower individuals and society.

Requirements

  • Develop an application based on the Android platform (Web or Native) that addresses the theme.
  • Submit an demo-video and a working prototype application by February 28, 2013.
  • The application must be an original work.

Prize table for each category:
1st place: EUR 25 000
2nd place: EUR 10 000
3rd place: EUR 5 000
4th and 5th place: Honorary Diplomas

Deadlines 2013

February 28, 2013: Last date for Application Submission
March 1, 2013: Evaluation of entries
March 16, 2013: Announcement of semi-finalists (top 5) in each category
March 20, 2013: Global evaluation of semi-finalist entries
April 25, 2013: Announcement of finalist teams (top 2) in each category

Evaluation Process
The first evaluation phase results in the selection of the semi-finalist teams, the top 5 in each category. The second evaluation phase of the semi-finalist entries is will be evaluated by representatives from 3-4 countries globally and results in the selection of the finalist teams, the top 2 in each category.
The third evaluation phase will be done at the Awards Ceremony by a jury (panel of experts), who will select the winners

The submitted applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
– Android application (Native or Web)
– Addresses the theme “Apps for the Networked Society”
– Working application prototype
– Innovative solution
– Business potential

The Ericsson Application Awards give you and your team the opportunity to gain a foothold in the app industry while also earning recognition and making contacts within the telecom industry.

This year there will be two categories; one for students and one for small and medium-sized enterprises with fewer than 100 employees. The theme for this year’s competition is “Apps for City Life”, in support of Ericsson’s vision for a Networked Society in which – through a combination of mobility, broadband, the cloud, applications and services – anything and everything is connected.

Teams need to develop an application based on the Android platform that addresses the theme. Last year’s winner in the company category was a mobile health-care app developed in Kenya. First prize in the student category, meanwhile, was awarded to a painting and chatting app developed in China. Finally, a medico-social platform that provides access to medical information developed in Egypt won the Technology for Good prize. In all, 143 teams from more than 50 countries took part and a total of 242 ideas, videos and apps were submitted – twice as many as in the previous year.

This year, several prizes will be awarded in each category:

  • First place: EUR 25,000
  • Second place: EUR 10,000
  • Third place: EUR 5000
  • Fourth and fifth place: certificates
