FASPE Summer Ethics Fellowship 2017 for Graduate Students & Early-Career Professionals (Fully Funded to Germany)

FASPE (Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics) is a fully-funded, two-week summer program that uses the conduct of professionals in Nazi Germany as a launching point and backdrop for an intensive study of contemporary professional ethics. FASPE is predicated upon the power of place. Fellows visit Auschwitz and other sites in Germany and Poland where they consider how to apply the lessons of history to the ethical challenges they will face in their careers.
Ten to 15 Fellows from each profession will be chosen to participate in FASPE 2017 through a competitive application process. Fellowships cover all program costs including round-trip travel from New York to Europe, European travel, lodging, and food. Business, Journalism, and Law Fellows travel together and share some seminars; Medical and Seminary Fellows travel together and share some seminars.

The dates for 2017 are:

  • Business, Journalism, and Law: May 21 – June 2, 2017
  • Medical and Seminary: June 19 – June 30, 2017 (All fellows are expected to arrive in Europe at least one day prior to the start of their program.)

Eligibility Requirements:

Business:
Business applicants must either be enrolled in an MBA or MSC program at the time of their application or have completed their MBA or MSC between January 2015 and January 2017. FASPE seeks applicants who are interested in corporate careers.
Journalism:
Journalism applicants must be interested in journalism as a career. They must fit into one of the following two categories: 1) enrolled in a graduate program of any kind and planning to work as a journalist; 2) working as a journalist with an undergraduate degree received between May 2012 and May 2016 or a graduate degree received between May 2015 and January 2017.
Law:
Law applicants must either be enrolled in a JD or LLM program at the time of their application or have received a JD or LLM between May 2016 and January 2017. FASPE seeks students who are interested in working as practicing attorneys, although applicants who have a JD or LLM degree and are planning an academic career are also eligible. FASPE is interested in applications from students with a wide range of legal interests including, among others: corporate law, constitutional law, criminal law, environmental law, international law, public interest law, real estate law, securities law, and tax law. FASPE has a particular interest in working with students who expect to work as litigators.
Medical:
Medical applicants must be enrolled in an MD or DO program at the time of their application or must have an MD or DO and be working towards a subsequent degree.
Seminary:
Applicants to FASPE Seminary must either be enrolled in graduate school preparing for work as a religious leader at the time of application or they must be working as clergy with an MDiv degree received between January 2015 and January 2017. Students may be studying in a seminary, divinity school, or other graduate program. FASPE generally seeks students who are preparing for pastoral careers, but is also interested in working with students on academic tracks.
FASPE programs are non-denominational. Candidates of all religious, ethnic, cultural, and national backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
