Gauteng Accelerator Programme (GAP) Innovation Competition 2016 ( R2.5 million in seed funding and cash prizes,)

Application Deadline: June 2nd 2016

The GAP Innovation Competitions are looking for innovators, researchers and entrepreneurs that are working on novel ideas that will improve the efficiency of government service delivery, increase the competitiveness of the local economy and enhance the quality of life of ordinary citizens.

Categories are in the ICT, Medical, Biosciences and Green economy.

GAP Green

  • GAP Green opens for entries during April/May each year for approximately 5 weeks, and welcomes submissions from a diverse spectrum of participants including researchers, entrepreneurs and community-based organisations.
  • Entries are then interrogated by expert internal and external adjudication panels to select 4 prize winners who will be offered seed funding and incubation starting in the following January with The Innovation Hub’s Maxum Business Incubator and Climate Innovation Centre.

The GAP-Biosciences Programme

  • The GAP-Biosciences programme seeks to address the gap that exists between prototype stage and commercialisation of life science technologies. While scientists thrive in an R&D environment, generally there is a lack of business skills. To address this, GAP-Biosciences seeks to provide essential business skills specifically to these scientists, and is aimed at facilitating the commercialisation of bioscience technologies.
  • The first component of the programme is a five-day technology entrepreneurship Workshop presented by experienced local industry experts. This workshop presents an overview of business essentials to all individuals willing to establish science and technology-based ventures.

GAP Medical

  • Medical practitioners working at hospitals in South Africa encounter numerous challenges on a daily basis. These challenges are an opportunity for the development of innovative solutions that have potential for significant impact on the provision of health services to the people of Gauteng and South Africa at large.
  • Most of the service delivery enabling solutions identified by the healthcare staff and researchers remain unknown and untapped, resulting in poor health services in the country. It is with this background that The Innovation Hub seeks to support and showcase innovations in the health sector, pertaining primarily to hospital care. This approach will foster a culture of innovation, where the innovations are nurtured and applied by the hospitals.
