German government Creating Perspectives: Business for Development Program 2018 for East African SMEs

To better cope with ongoing industrial transformation processes and a further increase of global business international strategic partnerships have to be strengthened. This is the intention of “Creating Perspectives”, an initiative of the East African Community (EAC), the East African Business Council (EABC), the Federation of German Industries (BDI) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German government represented by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Partnerships between East African and German companies to jointly create business opportunities is the key objectives of Creating Perspective, based on a mutual network.

To turn this idea into practice, the initiative seeks to identify companies in the EAC region operating in production or manufacturing in various sectors interested to enter global partnerships with German peers. The companies should be active on the market for about 3 years or more, have an annual turnover of USD 50,000 to USD 5,000,000 and at least 10 employees.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the programme, your company should fulfil the following eligibility criteria:
• Fully or mostly privately owned
• Formal registration in EAC country
• Annual Turnover 50.000 – 5 Mio USD
• Not less than 10 employees
• Not less than 3 years on the market
• Sound financial data

In addition, you can provide documents to make your application more meaningful. the following documents have to be provided for the application process:
• Registration certificate
• References
• Financial data

Participation of women-owned companies is actively encouraged.

Selection criteria

Application will be selected according to a set of criteria and through close consultations with project partners. Below you can find some indicators concerning the criteria:
• Business development plan
• Professionalized set-up
• Extent of matching with EAC and German priority sectors
• Companies’ motivation to actively participate in the programme
• Background story is important for “Creating Perspectives”
• Gender aspects

Benefits:

In order to initiate successful partnership between companies from EAC and Germany, demand oriented matching and business events will be launched, embedded in various networking events. A group of German and East African companies will be matched to establish one-to-one mentoring and twinning partnerships in order to initiate cross-cultural business activities. Companies selected for the programme are expected to contribute financially to a certain extend for attending the trainings. Travel expenses will be covered.

Selection Process

The screening of applications will be conducted by national juries consisting of representatives from GIZ and the national business membership organisations, supported by international experts who know well the German market. The juries will select a certain number of companies resulting in a group of beneficiaries representing all EAC partner states.

Phase I: Beneficiaries for Management Trainings
Needs-based training programmes for successful applicants

Phase II: Beneficiaries for Mentoring Programme
For a small group of the successful applicants, demand-driven coaching and mentoring services will be facilitated.

In general, B2B events and matchmaking is part of the programme for strengthening business relationships with German enterprises.
