The Global Development Network (GDN) invites researchers from developing countries and transition economies and best performing researchers from Regional Research Competitions (RRCs) to submit research proposals for its second round of the Global Research Competition (GRC) 2013.
THE COMPETITION
The GRC is a competitive grant program under GDN’s Global Research Capacity Building Program. In this annual competition, social science researchers from developing countries and transition economies are invited to team up with researchers from around the world on collaborative inter-regional or cross-country research projects.
The competition is inter-regional/cross-country both in terms of its analytic scope and team composition.
RESEARCH THEMES FOR THE 2013 ROUND
The research themes for the 2013 round of the GRC are:

THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Please review carefully. Any application that does not follow the below mentioned guidelines will NOT be considered.
Who is eligible?
1. Researchers from developing and transition countries: The GRC is open only to researchers from developing countries and transition economies (interested in inter-regional or cross-country research collaboration), with the requirement that they need to be citizens and current residents of any of these countries. For e.g. an Angolan residing in Chile is eligible to apply. The applicants can be asked to submit proof of their citizenship and residency through documents with legal standing, at any point during the competition.
o Please note that all personal information details as provided in the application (and CV) should be factually correct, else the application will be liable for disqualification. Any missing details may be asked to be provided.
2. Inter-regional or cross-country team composition:
o Individual researchers: from developing and transition countries, seeking support in finding fellow researchers (with similar research thematic interest) to form eligible inter-regional or cross-country teams can apply for the competition. GDN will provide support to all individual applicants in finding peers for collaboration. For more information please refer to the application process below (pg. 6).
o Team applicants: pre-formed inter-regional or cross-country teams are encouraged to apply for the competition. For more information please refer to the application process below (pg. 7).
o Please note that in the selection process, only applications from eligible teams will be considered, so all applicants must eventually form inter-regional or cross-country teams i.e. include members1 from and research on, more than one developing country/region. For more information, please refer to the application process below.
o The teams may include at least two members and up to four.
o Applicants may collaborate with other applicants from same or different sub-disciplines of social sciences.
o An individual may only be part of one team. Multiple collaborations will not be considered.
3. Age:
o The upper age limit for an applicant is 45 years as of 15 June, 2013.
o The average age of the entire team must be below 40 years as of 15 June, 2013.
o Researchers (especially, female researchers) below the age of 35 years (as of 15 June, 2013) are strongly encouraged to apply.
4. Expression of Interest (EOI) submission: Teams2 can submit only one EOI under only one theme.
o All team members must contribute equally to the research, at all stages. This should be clearly reflected in the Proposal.
5. Global Training Workshop: Research teams with most innovative and interesting EOIs will be invited to attend a Global Training Workshop before the final selection of grant recipients.
o Shortlisted teams with more than two researchers must nominate any two researchers (from two different countries/regions) to attend the workshop.
6. Call for Proposals (CFP): All eligible inter-regional or cross-country teams (including those that are not invited to attend the Global Training Workshop) can submit their full research proposals.
THE APPLICATION PROCESS

HOW TO APPLY
Follow the steps given below:
Individual Applicants
(For applicants who require support in finding collaborators to form inter-regional or cross-country teams)
1. Individual applicants can log on to GDN’s online platform using the following internet link: www.gdn.int/grcplatform and fill in the “Individual form” for Registration and submit it. On completion of this step, the applicant will receive an automated response via email at the address that was provided in the application form confirming successful registration.
2. The online platform allows registered individual researchers to view all eligible registrations and contact (via email) those with similar research thematic interest for collaboration, to form inter-regional or cross-country teams i.e. include members from more than one developing country/region or transition economy.
3. The collaborating inter-regional or cross-country teams will appoint one member as the principal researcher (PR) and the rest will be associated as research collaborators (RC)4. The teams will then submit an EOI via GDN’s online platform at the following link: www.gdn.int/grcplatform. All team members must equally contribute to the research, however, the right to submit the EOI remains with the PR.
4. The eligible inter-regional or cross-country teams with most innovative EOIs will be contacted for a Global Training workshop via email at the address provided in the registration form. Attendance at the training workshop is optional.
5. The eligible inter-regional or cross-country teams will submit a final proposal (CFP) via GDN’s online platform, at the following link: www.gdn.int/grcplatform.
6. Submission and review of a proposal, as well as attendance at the training workshop does not automatically indicate the conferring of a grant. Eligibility criteria will apply at each application stage and GDN reserves the right to deny grants to proposals.
Team Applicants
(For pre-formed inter-regional or cross-country teams who do not require support in finding collaborators)
1. Researchers who have an eligible inter-regional or cross-country team (and do not require any support from GDN in finding research collaborators) need not fill the individual form for registration and may apply directly with an EOI i.e. fill the team form.
2. Teams will appoint one member as the principal researcher (PR) and the rest will be associated as research collaborators (RC)5. The teams will then submit the EOI via GDN’s online platform at the following link:
www.gdn.int/grcplatform. All team members must equally contribute to the research, however, the right to submit the EOI remains with the PR. On completion of this step, the applicants will receive an automated response via email at the address provided in the application form confirming successful submission of EOI.
3. The eligible inter-regional or cross-country teams with most innovative EOIs will be contacted for a Global Training workshop via email at the address provided in the registration form. The attendance at the training workshop is optional.
