Harvard Undergraduate Women in Business Innovation Competition

Extended Application Deadline: September 8 2013

The HUWIB Innovation Competition aims to support the innovative vision of college students around the world. The program provides a network of resources including mentorship, funding, and peer connection to launch the next great idea. One unique focus of the competition is advocacy and support for women in the field of entrepreneurship. Teams must be comprised of at least 50% female, and ideas with focus toward the advancement of women will be given special consideration.

HUWIB’s Innovation Competition is designed to promote both social enterprise and innovative business vision among undergraduates. Since its inception in 2009, the competition has rewarded innovation and collaboration by funding and guiding teams of students to design enterprising business proposals.

At the annual Intercollegiate Business Convention (IBC), a globally-recognized conference hosted by HUWIB, competition finalists will have the opportunity to present their ideas to a panel of qualified judges who then announce the winner at IBC. Winners not only receive a monetary prize of $10,000, but also build a network of peers and mentors who can help them continue to develop their ideas beyond the competition.

Moreover, given the wide reach of IBC, which gathers over 1000 students from top universities around the world and attracts notable speakers and panelists such as Diane von Furstenberg and Anne Sweeney, winners also benefit from public recognition. Past winners have included Lauren Braun, a Cornell University graduate who invented a bracelet device to track immunizations of infants in underserved communities, and Molly Yang, a Harvard College student who created IdeaMash.com, a social network that connects students with potential collaborators on campus.

The competition is separated into two distinct categories: commercial entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship.

Commercial Entrepreneurship
The commercial entrepreneurship category is targeted toward innovative ideas focusing on tapping market potential and making profitable return. Unlike small businesses, we look for startups with a scalable business model that aim to change the world. This category would include plans within the technology, service, and product sectors. The criteria for judging in this
category are:
• Innovation
• Feasibility
▪Profit potential
•Scalability
•Value adding to consumers
Social Entrepreneurship
This category rewards impactful social enterprise ideas with a positive impact to society or to facilitate a desired social change. The idea can take a variety of forms, from advocacy to facilitating collaboration to new technology. The plan can be a for-profit, non-profit, or hybrid model, and can occur within or across the nonprofit and business sectors. The criteria for judging in this category are:
•Innovation
•Feasibility
•Sustainability
•Social impact
