Application Deadline: March 1st 2013
Hektoen International invites you to submit an essay of 1,000 to 2,500 words on a subject related to medicine and culture by March 1, 2013. Suggested topics include medicine and art or literature, history of medicine, ethics, music, philosophy, anthropology, linguistics, etc. Clinical studies or case reports are not eligible.
We are offering two prizes:
- The Hektoen Grand Prix, for the winner – $1,000
- The Hektoen Silver Prize, for the runner-up – $800
The winners will be announced by email on May 1, 2013. All essays will be considered for publication; the Grand Prix and Silver Prize will be showcased in the Summer 2013 issue, and others will be featured throughout the year. For more details, please consult our guidelines below.
General guidelines
- The contest is open to participants 18 years or older.
- Please send articles to contest@hektoeninternational.org and write “Essay Contest” and the title of your submission in the subject line of your email.
- Submissions will be read by the editors of Hektoen International and peer-reviewed. Entries that do not receive prizes may still be published in the journal.
- All entries must be received by March 1, 2013. Winners will be announced by email on May 1, 2013.

Articles
Articles must be unpublished, original work that relates medicine to the humanities and 1,000-2,500 words in length. For each article, please include:
- A cover page with:
- Author(s) names, titles/degrees, professional affiliation, and location (as you would like it listed in the journal)
- A 75-150 word biography
- The author’s contact information
- Article text with:
- The title and page numbers in the document header
- The full text of the article in Times New Roman, font 12 and double-spaced
Also, please use the Chicago Manual of Style format (www.chicagomanualofstyle.org) or AMA Manual of Style format (www.amamanualofstyle.com).
The following are examples of qualifying entries:
- The anatomist’s violin
- ‘The Lament of the Old Woman of Beare’—contrasting the passage of life
- Bosch’s Stone Operation: meaning, medicine, and morality
- Citizen Zinsser: portrait of a Renaissance man
- Emily Dickinson’s mystifying in-sight
References
Please make sure that your references are accurate before submission. Quotations should be referenced, as should related works cited in the text. References should be formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style or AMA Manual of Style, with the endnotes in numerical order.
File format/name
Please save the submission as the title (or abbreviated title) followed by the author’s last name.
For the article “Big Hugh” by Dr. Smith, save as follows:
Big Hugh_Smith.doc
Illustrations
If you include an image with your article, please send a JPEG image and also a Microsoft Word document with the following information:
- Captions and source (address of website where you found the image)
- If art, the title, medium, dimensions, and date of work as well as the artist’s name, country of origin, and years of birth and death
If several illustrations are submitted with an article, please number each illustration in the order it should appear in the piece (e.g. Fig number_Name of item_artist’s last name/source.jpeg).
For the illustration of the figure “Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh save as follows:

For an illustration from the public domain, provide the source in lieu of the artist’s name, as in the case of a photo of a beech tree from Wikipedia:

Patient consent/confidentiality
Our confidentiality policy is based on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Please refer to this document if you have any questions: http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/. Authors/artists should protect the confidentiality of all persons and not reveal personal details without their consent.
Review process
The editorial board and the journal editors review contributions for appropriateness of originality, style, and content. All reviewers and editors advise the Editor-in-Chief, who makes the final decision whether to publish the article.
Copyright
Authors retain the copyright to their submissions to Hektoen International. However, we request that authors refrain from submitting their work for publication until the piece has been published online and archived (usually 4-5 months after publication). Authors are also requested to notify us and reference the Hektoen International website as the original publisher in subsequent publications of the article.
All submissions are presumed to be the stated author/artist’s original work. Rights to images submitted for illustration should be acquired prior to submission.
