What: Ian Perry Prize for Young Photo Journalist
About: Entrants must submit a portfolio and a brief synopsis of a project they would undertake if they won the scholarship. The prize consists of £3,500 towards their chosen assignment £500 to those awarded Highly Commended and Commended.
Eligibility: Open to anyone of any age attending a full time photographic course and to any photographer of 24 years and under.
Ian Parry was a photojournalist who died while on assignment for The Sunday Times during the Romanian revolution in 1989. He was just 24 years of age.
Aidan Sullivan, then picture editor, and Ian’s friends and family created the Ian Parry Scholarship in order to build something positive from such a tragic death.
Each year, an international photographic competition for young photographers who are either attending a full-time photographic course or are under 24 is held.
“The IPS is a unique chance for emerging photojournalists to not only have their work assessed and circulated within the wider context of the professional photographic industry but also featured in a major international publication. Entering awards has now become the most effective way to showcase your work and I would encourage more students to invest in this kind of free promotion” Rebecca McClelland Creative Director IPS.

Benefits include:
- The Sunday Times Magazine publishes the finalist’s work, which shines a spotlight on these young photographers and provides an excellent launch into a professional career in photography.
- Canon provides a choice of equipment to the winner
- World Press Photo automatically accepts the winner into its final list of nominees for the Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam.
- Reportage by Getty Images adds the winner to their on line Emerging Talent group.
- Save the Children offers one of the finalists an all expenses paid assignment.
This is a significant prize for any photographer and continues with the support of The Sunday Times Magazine & Canon.
This year, for the first time our extremely well attended exhibition will be held for two weeks from the 26th September at the MOTHER gallery, MOTHER, Biscuit Building 10 Redchurch Street, London E2 7D from 11am – 5pm.
The Ian Parry Scholarship now has a ‘digital entry’ process. We believe this will be a more efficient, eco friendly process and less expensive for the applicants. There are two options
1. You can upload via FTP

How to Apply
1. If you are sending via FTP, follow the FTP instructions below.
2. If you are not using the FTP, send via the free You Send It service, as detailed further down. What you should send – very important – please make sure you send all documents together
• A completed application form with your tutor’s name and current contact (mobile and email) details on it. You can download this from our website www.ianparry.org
• A word document with your story proposal (this should be the assignment that you would like to shoot should you win the scholarship. No more than 1A4 page. The idea needs to be original showing some research and you should include a budget and references. This is an important element, which will be considered by the judges.
• A portfolio of 12 images. This should ideally be a photo essay but can also be single images. Caption information and your name and contact details should be stored in the metadata.
