Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) is looking for a Journalism Trainer to help building the capacity of South Sudanese journalists through improving their skills and knowledge in professional journalism that is based on human rights and fact checking.
This professional opportunity includes working with journalists, editors, media managers, journalism students and civil society organizations in South Sudan. This is a full-time opportunity.
Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) is a leading international media development organization based in Canada with experience in more than 27 countries across the world. JHR’s mission is to empower journalists to cover human rights stories ethically and effectively to benefit their own communities.
Duties and responsibilities:
- The media trainer will be assigned one (1) media outlet or more and embedded with for a period of 12 months.
- Work as a long-term trainer and mentor to local journalists working within their assigned media house.
- Assist local journalists within their assigned media house to produce community based stories which are connected to human rights.
- Hold (plan & deliver) both formal and informal workshops with their assigned media house.
- Produce monthly reports which track project progress and the status of the projects’ deliverables.
- Conduct direct need assessments, participants’ evaluations, and development monitoring and any other data collection methods as assigned by the in-country director.
- If deemed safe, work outside of the capital Juba as assigned.
- Deliver a daily briefing, or in accordance with work circumstances, to the team leader that highlights project progress and emerging or possible obstacles.
- Create blog postings and success stories for public engagement outside of South Sudan.
- Playing a liaison role between JHR and the local media partners.
Skills/experiences/qualifications:
- Journalism degree or relevant journalism experience.
- Strong working journalism experience of no less than three years.
- Strong knowledge of and commitment to human rights, specifically gender equality.
- Significant training, teaching, or educational experience preferred.
- Knowledge of, and interest in, international development and media development.
- Knowledge of, and preferably work experience in, a post-conflict environment in sub-Saharan Africa.
- Ability and willingness to live and work effectively and successfully in a cross-cultural environment.
- Ability to multi-task and work in a team environment, as well as independently.
- Proven skills in capacity-building of other staff and partners.
- Extremely self-motivated, and proven ability to manage and motivate others.
- Demonstrated skills in networking and facilitation.
- Excellent interpersonal skills–excellent written and communication skills.
- Fluency in English is required and knowledge of Arabic is an asset
