LéO Africa Institute Young and Emerging Leaders Project (YELP) 2019 for young east Africans (Funded)

Application Deadline: November 23rd 2018

Are you a passionate East African change maker between 20-30 years old looking for a network of like-minded people from all over East Africa that will transform the face of leadership on the continent?

The Young and Emerging Leaders Project (YELP) is an initiative of the LéO Africa Institute, which has been ongoing for 2 years, that annually inducts 20-30 outstanding thought leaders into a fellowship program designed to train and orient values of self-advancement, integrity, social responsibility, and socioeconomic transformation.

Fellows of the YELP come from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Burundi, and have backgrounds in media, social enterprise, the Arts, innovation, and activism.

The fellowship imparts critical skills needed in leadership that transforms the individual and society around them. This is achieved through critical reflection sessions, conversations with leaders from various sectors, peer-to-peer sharing and readings about different leaders in Africa and the rest of the world.

At the heart of what we want participants to achieve from this Fellowship is to connect their ideas and visions to individual action and to embrace the concept of servant leadership: the idea of submitting one’s self to the betterment of lives of others and a better society.

Upon graduation, YELP alumni form part of the Institute’s growing network of outstanding thought leaders across East Africa. They continuously support and lift each other up, inspire one another, and collectively encourage each other to become positive change makers. The alumni network is also kept in touch with one another through our Annual Leaders Gathering event that brings together all members of the LéO Africa Institute across Africa

The fellowship consists of 3 seminars in March, July, and January (of the next year). The seminars are 3 days long – from Friday to Sunday.

Benefits:

  • All the seminars take place in Uganda, therefore, if you live outside of Uganda, you will have to cover your cost of travel to Kampala. However, once in Uganda, all the costs are covered by the institute – inclusive of transport, accommodation and food.

Selection Criteria

The selection of candidates for the Young and Emerging Leaders project will be highly competitive, and for the 2018 class limited to participants from within East Africa (Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania).

The nominees should:

  1. Be involved in an initiative that directly impacts the lives of many people in their community
  2. Commit to travel to and make time for all the three seminars in the Fellowship
  3. Be between the ages of 18 and 30 as of January 1st 2018 (subject to review on case by case basis)

The selected candidates will graduate as fellows after undertaking three seminars on various aspects of leadership. Fellows will then pledge to take on an extra commitment in implementing a project or champion a cause with demonstrated capacity to have positive impact on society.

Candidates who graduate will join the LéO Africa Institute’s Leadership Network of outstanding individuals in East Africa. The network that is formed through the different cohorts of classes will continue to be brought together through our various platforms, collaborative engagements, and at the annual leaders gathering (ALG), the Institute’s flagship thought leadership event.
