Magnum Foundation Photography & Human Rights Scholarship Program for photographers and journalists from non-Western countries to Study in USA (Fully Funded)

Magnum Foundation offers scholarships to photographers and journalists from non-Western countries to support their participation in the six-week Photography & Human Rights program.

Co-organized by Magnum Foundation  and New York University Tisch School of the Arts, this intensive program focuses students on strategies for creating effective visual stories that advance human rights in their home countries.

In 2015 Magnum Foundation will offer Human Rights Fellowships for the 6th year of its summer program, Photography & Human Rights at the Department of Photography & Imaging of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, led by Professor Fred Ritchin and Susan Meiselas, Magnum photographer and President of Magnum Foundation.

The Program

  • During the six-week program, students will explore multimedia and traditional presentation strategies for their photo essays, which they will develop through two studio courses.
  • A lecture course will provide participants with an opportunity to look at photography’s strengths and weaknesses, both real and imagined, in attempting to determine new strategies for impact as both society and technology evolve.
  • The final component is a discussion and writing course correlating with public guest lecture series featuring speakers from the fields of photojournalism, law, and media

Scholarship Worth:

  • The scholarships cover full tuition for six credits, travel, and room and board during the program.
  • Intermediate and advanced international students, including experienced professionals living and working outside of North America and Western Europe are eligible to apply.
  • Two scholarships supported by Open Society Foundations are awarded to photographers working in China and Egypt, while
  • another scholarship funded by the Geneviève McMillan-Reba Stewart Foundation is earmarked for a female journalist working and living in the Middle East.
