The New Zealand Aid Programme offers scholarships to people from developing countries who
motivated to make a difference at home. This means you’ll study subjects that will help with social, economic or political needs in your own country, and you’re willing to return home for at least two
years afterwards, so your country can benefit from what you’ve learned.
Priority sectors
Scholarships are for study in subjects that support sustainable development. This means different things for different countries, but some examples are qualifications in renewable energy, agriculture, fisheries, disaster risk management, natural resource management, health, and education.
Scholarships will be offered at postgraduate level for study related to Sustainable Economic Development with preference given to study in sectors of:
- Agriculture development and
- Renewable Energy
Type and level of scholarship
New Zealand Development Scholarships are available for the following qualifications:
- Postgraduate Certificate (6 months)
- Postgraduate Diploma (1 year)
- Masters Degree (1 – 2 years)
- Applicants from Commonwealth countries are also eligible to apply for a PhD (3 – 4 years).
Eligible countries
Applications for New Zealand Scholarships are welcome from the following countries:
Algeria, Angola , Botswana, Cameroon, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
Eligibility criteria
Candidates must meet all the scholarship eligibility criteria including:
- Be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of commencing your scholarship. Preference
- Be a citizen of the country from which you are applying for a scholarship and have resided in
that country for at least the last two years (i.e. permanent residents of these countries are not
eligible to apply). - Agree to return to your home country for a minimum of two years on completion of the scholarship.
- Not have citizenship or permanent residence status of New Zealand, Australia, USA, Canada,
European Union countries, United Kingdom, Japan, Israel, South Korea, Qatar, United Arab
Emirates, Saudi Arabia. - Have resided in your home country for at least two years immediately prior to commencing
your scholarship. Note: this condition does not apply to applicants who are members of the
diplomatic corps or their dependants. - Have at least 2 years of work experience (part time or fulltime, paid or voluntary).
- Not be serving military personnel.
- Be able to satisfy Immigration requirements for international student entry to New Zealand (i.e.
medical checks, police clearances/character checks, etc.) - Be academically and linguistically able to obtain an Offer of Place for the proposed programme of study from the tertiary institute where you will undertake your scholarship.
- Not have been previously terminated from a New Zealand Government Scholarship
- Seek a qualification that will contribute to the sustainable development of your home country
Scholarship Worth:
New Zealand has first-rate education institutions that offer world-recognised qualifications. Successful
applicants will have access to excellent academic knowledge in quality facilities.
- The scholarship will cover air travel, full tuition fees, an establishment allowance, living allowance and other costs in New Zealand.
- The partner of a student is eligible for a work visa that allows them to live and work in New Zealand for the duration of their partner’s study.
Preferences
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate strong academic ability, leadership qualities, and a commitment to the development of their home country.
Preference is also given to candidates who are 39 years of age or younger at the time of commencing their scholarship.
English language requirement
- New Zealand tertiary education institutions set their own admission requirements for English language proficiency. As a guide, most New Zealand education institutions require a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0 for postgraduate level study.
- Some postgraduate qualifications require a higher score, particularly in education and the health sciences. All applicants should check the English language proficiency requirements of their selected New Zealand education institution.
- In some cases, applicants whose tertiary education has been in English will not be required to provide an IELTS or TOEFL test score, but will be required to provide a letter from the tertiary institution the applicant last attended stating that English was the language of instruction.
Application Process:
1. Check if you’re eligible on http://www.aid.govt.nz/funding-and-contracts/scholarships
2. If yes, decide the type of institution and qualification that is right for you. For more information
about studying in New Zealand visit www.studyinnewzealand.com.
3. Apply for an Offer of Place (admission) at your preferred New Zealand institution. For most
courses, you will be able to apply online.
4. Once you have a confirmed Offer of Place, download and complete all sections of the New Zealand Scholarship application form
5. Attach an up to date Curriculum Vitae.
6. Attach your IELTS or TOEFL certificate, if required (if you do not have a current IELTS or TOEFL certificate, please refer to FAQs)
7. Write and attach your two 500 word essays (as per the requirements detailed on the application form) and, for Masters research and PhD candidates, your research proposal.
8. Obtain three references (as per the requirements detailed on the application form)
9. Obtain certified copies of all required supporting documentation (as per the requirements detailed on the application form)
10. Submit 2 copies of your completed application form, with all attachments and supporting documents (including an Offer of Place) by the deadline specified for the scholarship type you selected and send to the address noted on your country page at http://www.aid.govt.nz/funding-and-contracts/scholarships, to arrive by the deadline.
