Douglas Mwangi: A Kenyan Social Entrepreneur and Recipient of a 2018 Queen’s Young Leader Award – Creating social impact blog December 11, 2017 - 8:21 pm
[…] Douglas Mwangi is a founder of Oasis Mathare, the first digital community hub in the Mathare Slum in Nairobi, Kenya. He launched the community center while working as a youth leader with Digital Opportunity Trust, an international organization that supports youth to become leaders and innovators. Oasis Mathare provides education, early childhood development center, a community library, skills training, and a safe community space for vulnerable children and unemployed youths. Like many of his peers who were not able to go to school, Douglas thought of finding social inclusion through drugs and gangs. But he turned to something else. Though his mobile phone, Douglas found education, security, and opportunity. He signed up for an online course and earned a diploma in web development. Douglas leads a team of 5 staff and 10 volunteers who have helped over 2,000 children and youth in Mathare. Douglas is the only Kenyan social entrepreneur who has received the 2018 award, which supports and celebrates exceptional young people from across the Commonwealth who are taking the lead in their communities and using their talents and skills to transform lives. Winners of this esteemed Award receive a unique package of mentoring, training and networking. The award is collected from Her Majesty the Queen in the UK.
