APPLICATIONS FOR ADMISSION TO
LLM AND PHD PROGRAMMES 2014/2015

The deadline for applications is 15 January 2014.

Applications are invited especially from candidates in the East African Community (EAC)  Partner States (i.e. Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda) for entry into a postgraduate study programme in law (LLM or PhD) offered by the Tanzanian-German Centre for Eastern African Legal Studies (TGCL)starting on 1 August 2014.

The TGCL has been established at the University of Dar es Salaam School of Law in cooperation with the University of Bayreuth. Its programmes are funded by the German  Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Foreign Office within the programme “Establishment of Centres of Excellence for Teaching and Research to Train Future Leaders in Sub-Saharan Africa”.

Curriculum
The TGCL postgraduate study programmes are conducted at the University of Dar es Salaam School of Law. The LLM candidates will pursue a programme consisting of coursework and a dissertation with an East African regional and comparative perspective. Students will be admitted to the LLM programme in Regional Integration and EAC Law.
The LLM dissertation should focus on EAC law in relation to the student’s own national  law, particularly (but not exclusively) in thematic fields related to the areas of cooperation  under the EAC Treaty.

PhD candidates in their theses should compare two or more national laws, which deal  with thematic fields related to the areas of cooperation under the EAC Treaty.

Seminars and workshops on research methodology and professional leadership skills will  be offered, accompanied by an introduction to German Law and the Law of the European  Union, and a German language course.

The LLM programme requires one year of full-time attendance. The PhD programme takes  three years of full time attendance.

 Regulations and Examination
The “General Regulations and Guidelines for Postgraduate Study Programmes” of the  University of Dar es Salaam (Directorate of Postgraduate Studies) and those of the University of Dar es Salaam School of Law for such programmes constitute the legal framework
for the programme.
Admission Requirements
The requirements for admission to the LLM and PhD programmes are for the LLM programme a Bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or its equivalent  from a recognised institution of higher legal education, and for the PhD programme an
excellent LLM degree from a recognised institution.

Scholarships
A limited number of scholarships is available for LLM and PhD students admitted to the  programmes. The scholarships cover university fees, health insurance, the cost of living  (including miscellaneous charges) of 2,400/3,000 EUR per annum for Tanzanians/NonTanzanians. Furthermore, a lump sum of 460 EUR for LLM and 920 EUR for PhD will be  paid for the cost of research. The LLM scholarship covers a period of one year, and the  PhD scholarship a period of three years. Full details of the conditions of scholarship are  available online at www.tgcl.uni-bayreuth.de.

Your application must contain the following documents (forms can be found at www.tgcl.uni-bayreuth.de):
1. A completed TGCL application form (3 copies)
2. A completed University of Dar es Salaam application form (3 copies)
3. The following attachments:
a) a letter of motivation (2 copies)
b) in case of application for scholarship: detailed letter stating the reasons
c) a curriculum vitae with clear evidence of periods of legal and other relevant education, training and practical experience (2 copies)
d) photocopies of all relevant certificates (birth certificate, school leaving certificates, certificates of legal or other professional education, including provisional  results for applicants who are in the final year of their LLB studies); in the case of  documents not in English an official translation should be attached
e) three letters of recommendation (signed and sealed)
f) three passport-size photographs
g) a release letter from the employer (if employed)
4. A proposal of the intended research
a) in the case of LLM candidates: 5 pages
b)in the case of PhD candidates: 15 pages
