The Goethe-Institut in Nairobi is calling on Kenyan creatives to apply for its recently introduced Nafasi fund.
As the Goethe-Institut Nairobi reopens its spaces this year with new and exciting programmes, it reaffirms its commitment to support the growth of an active, vibrant and sustainable cultural scene in Kenya by inviting all creatives to make the Goethe-Institut their home.
The centre remains a safe place, where artists can express themselves freely and present boundary-pushing and experimental work and tap into global networks.
Nafasi, carrying the dual meaning of space and opportunity, will give artists greater opportunities to present their work and reach new audiences.
Goethe-Institut will provide basic financial support to projects proposed to happen within its space in the following categories:
Exhibitions (three slots)
Visual artists can propose to use the space for concept-based exhibitions to be hosted in its auditorium for a period of 14 to 21 days. The exhibition shall include one artist talk within its run time.
In addition to usage of the space, Goethe-Institut shall directly cover the transportation, set up, technical support, poster design, photography and exhibition manning costs. This support does not include artist fees and production costs.
Performances including dance and theatre (four slots)
Performance artists are welcome to present a conceptual piece for a one-day performance within the auditorium. Applicants must have at least three years’ experience in this field and have at least two prior public performances.
The support will only cover use of the space inclusive of amenities, technical support and equipment, provision of dance mats, poster design, and photography. This does not include artist fees, props and production costs. Rehearsal space is available subject to availability.
Music concerts (two slots)
Mid-career and upcoming artists are welcome to propose a full set concert at the Goethe-institut auditorium or terrace. This can cover a full concert of up to three hours, album launches and listening parties.
Support is limited to use of the space inclusive of amenities, technical support and equipment available, light setup, poster design and photography. This does not include artist and band fees. Rehearsal space is available subject to availability.
