Launched in 1992, the year of the Rio Earth Summit, the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) is a corporate program, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and executed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

GEF primarily works in five focal areas: conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, protection of international waters, reduction of chemicals such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and prevention of land degradation, including sustainable forest management. Adaptation to climate change activities are funded by the GEF Strategic Priority for Adaptation and other donors.

Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) as a corporate programme, SGP is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on behalf of the GEF partnership, and is executed by the United Nations Office for Project Services ( UNOPS ).

 

The Small Grants Programme (SGP) is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and executed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). It is rooted in the belief that global environmental problems can best be addressed if local people are involved and there are direct community benefits and ownership.

Focal Areas: 
The SGP aims to deliver global environmental benefits in the areas of: biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, protection of fresh water and marine resources, prevention of land degradation and elimination of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and other harmful chemicals through community-based approaches.

The SGP will support small scale projects relating to the above 5 thematic areas, for activities that conserve and restore the environment while enhancing people’s well-being and livelihoods, taking into consideration gender, vulnerability and equality concerns.

Who can apply?
Civil society organizations (CSOs) with priority for national and local non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community-based organizations (CBOs), farmers, scientific community, women’s groups, and the youth and children organizations.

How much?
The maximum grant amount obtainable per project is US$ 30,000

However, in exceptional cases US $ 50 000 may be considered

Project duration:
Maximum duration is 24 months.

Deadline: 17 October 2013, Thursday 5.00 pm

Selection of grantees will follow a two stage process: proponents whose concept notes are shortlisted will be first invited to submit full proposals. The full proposals will then be evaluated to select successful grantees.
