The SheTrades Rwanda project aims to increase the competitiveness of women-owned businesses in Rwanda and connect them to markets. The project is implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC) under the framework of the SheTrades Initiative from September 2020 – February 2022. The project contributes to two outputs of the “Project to Enhance the Effectiveness and Efficiency of Export Growth Initiatives”, funded by the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF) and managed by the Ministry of Trade and Industry of Rwanda (MINICOM).

The SheTrades Rwanda project will:
• Improve business support ecosystem to support the growth of women’s economic empowerment initiatives and activities, including through the establishment of SheTrades Hub in Rwanda;
• Increase competitiveness of women owned businesses in the coffee and horticulture sectors;
• Increase business-linkage opportunities in local and regional markets for women owned businesses in the coffee and horticulture sectors.

1) Coffee Barista and Brewing skills

The training aims to provide training and certification against the Barista and Brewing modules from the Specialty Coffee Association Coffee Skills Programme – more information can be found on the SCA website: https://sca.coffee/education/programs/coffee-skills-program

The training will be delivered by an Authorised SCA Trainer delivering modules from the SCA Coffee Skills Program at the Intermediate and Professional levels. Participants will be awarded an SCA Certificate for each module if they pass. The training on barista and brewing aims to contribute to the skill set of people within the coffee service industry specifically targeting the skill sets of people to improve their prospects of skilled employment and career development; or for entrepreneurs to effectively establish or manage food service businesses centered around coffee service. 

The Intermediate level is suitable if you are already part of the industry, working in the field covered by the module, and have a firm knowledge of the basic skills. Experience working in the field is recommended for this level

2) Training Modules

– Barista Skills Module

Learn the practical skills you need behind the espresso bar: learn how to set your grinder, milk techniques and latte art, health and safety, customer service, and basic business practices.

– Brewing Module

Learn about the variety of methods for brewing coffee and the brewing variables that affect quality. The Brewing module provides hands-on learning on grind profiles, brewing methods, measuring coffee strength and charting a coffee’s extraction.

3) Target Participants and Application Criteria:

The target participant for this training is for primarily Small and Medium Enterprises that are owned or led by women, and are operating in the Rwandan coffee sector. 

Participants can be from a wide profile within the industry ranging from company owners, managers, quality controllers, coffee traders, roasters, café owners, baristas; and can also include women businesses owners or female staff member of cafes, restaurants and hotels etc. 

Applicants must show that they have experience in coffee, or currently working in a position that knowledge can be applied and provide some motivation for selection. 
Participant numbers are limited to 20. 

Depending on the number of applications received, and applications are likely to be limited to one person per company.

4) Dates and Venue

Dates and venue will be communicated as depending on the interest received and number of applications.
