Calling for entries for the world’s richest short story prize
The £30,000 Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award is calling for submissions for 2016 .
The Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award is the richest prize for a single short story in the English language open to any novelist or short story writer from around the world who is published in the UK.
Worth £30,000 to the winner, and open to stories of 6,000 words or fewer, the international award, one of the highlights of the literary calendar, has attracted a remarkable list of entrants in its first six years.
The Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award stages two reading events each year when outstanding actors read shortlisted stories hosted by Foyles in their flagship store on Charing Cross Road, London and partnered with WordTheatre, the story performance specialists.
Requirements:
- The Sunday Times EFG Short Story Award is open to writers of any nationality; entrants just have to show a previous record of publication in creative writing in the UK and Ireland
- Entries can be either unpublished or published within the previous 12 months.

The Award is open to authors writing in the English language, aged 18 years or over at the timeof submission , who must have been previously published in the English language in the UK or Ireland.

The Entry must not contain more than six thousand (6,000) words. The word count should belisted on the Entry and must be precise

Entries may be submitted by the author or by his/her publisher or agent with the author’sconsent.
- Writers have until Thursday, September 24, to submit their story.
- The winner will be announced at a gala dinner at Stationers’ Hall, London, in April next year, following the announcement of the longlist in early February and the shortlist in early March.
Prize:
Worth £30,000 to the winner, and £1,000 to each of the shortlisted authors, the annual award aims to promote and celebrate the excellence of the modern short story, and has attracted entries from some of the world’s finest writers.
Submission:
Applicants are encouraged to make their submission using the online Entry Form and then submitting their short story by email as early as possible before the deadline. If applicants are unable to access the online Entry Form, entries can be submitted by post.
Option A: EMAIL ENTRY
1. Read the terms and conditions thoroughly to check the author whose work is due to be submittedis eligible for the Award. Submission of an entry is taken as acceptance of all the terms and conditions.
2. Type andformatthe short story as per the following instructions:
- One entry per author
- Written in English
- A maximum of 6,000 words
- Typed
- Font: Arial, 12pt, black
- Double spaced
- No page numbers
- Include a front page which details the title of story and the word count ONLY. The author’s name should not be included in the document.
- No illustrations
3. Save as a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx) with the author name and short story title in the file name as per the following example: William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet (N.B. if the Short Story has already been published you can send the typeset PDF file instead, but Word documents are preferable).
4. Fill in the Entry Form below.
5. Send your story, with the author’s name and short story title in the subject line of your email, and send to: sundaytimesEFG@booktrust.org.uk
Option B: POSTAL ENTRY

3. Print ELEVEN (11) copies of the typed short story (single sided on white A4 paper).
