Are you interested in media, youth empowerment and storytelling? Are you based in or interested in the Middle East and North Africa? Do you want to build a network and work on projects connecting young media makers from Europe and the MENA region? Then work with us! We are looking for new voluntary members to strengthen our team!

The Middle East and North Africa Committee (MENAC) is a working committee of the European Youth Press. As a committee we focus on promoting intercultural dialogue and learning, building networks and partnerships to improve the contextual understanding between Europe, the Middle East and North Africa by bringing together young media makers from their respective regions.

By doing this, we hope to challenge dominant perspectives and dismantle prejudice between these regions and create a better understanding of all complexities involved.

How? MENAC organises projects for young media makers from Europe and the MENA region to create a sustainable network for young journalists.

After a short transition and internal restructuring, we want to bring more stories, organise at least one training opportunity and build a stronger network with old and new partnerships in 2018. But to do this we need you!

Tasks

EYP is looking for 2-4 new team members with different interests and background:

Project management: Writing project proposals, budget calculation and looking for funding application. Organising trainings and logistics.

Networking: Building sustainable partnerships with non-profit organisations and different media channels through Europe and the MENA region.

Storytelling and communication: Knowing how to build a (multimedia) story and how to bring it to our followers. Writing newsletters, managing our social media accounts. Look for and share in-depth stories on the MENA region and possible contributors to our own news site and blog.

Profile

Ideally you

lived/worked in the MENA region or a strong academic background of it
have experience in journalism/media and/or NGO work
speak and write English fluently, knowledge of Arabic is a strong asset
are able to commit at least 5 hours per week to the committee for a longer period of time on a voluntary basis
are aged between 20-35

“Inclusive Media: Rethinking Journalism Conditions for Women Across the Middle East” is a five-day training for 20 female journalists from Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, hosted in Amman, Jordan.

The training takes place from August 1- 5 2016 (arrival on 31st July, departure on 6th August).

“Inclusive Media” is a cooperation between the Middle East and North Africa Committee (menac) of the European Youth Press (EYP) and Daem for Media. It is funded by the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany, ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) and pedagogically supported by the Syrian Female Journalist Network (SFJN).

In the training, participants will get the chance to share experience on risk and gender, challenges in their work-life and for women in media across borders. They will be trained by awarded Azerbaijani reporter and media trainer Arzu Geybullayeva on how to improve their reporting skills and by Syrian journalist and co-founder of the Syrian Female Journalist Network (SFJN) Rula Asad on human rights reporting and pitching.

The training will result in a one-day media production, facilitated by menac and the trainers. Participants are expected to bring stories they want to work on to the training. Alternatively participants can use this day to build reporting groups for follow-up stories and get advice and counselling in terms of content and security from trainers and facilitators. Additionally, participants will receive a one-day hands-on security training. The week will be complemented by high-profile panel discussions and a cultural evening programme.

Requirements:

Female (identifying as female) journalist
20 – 30 years old at the time of the training (please include your date of birth in your CV)
Residing in one of the following countries: Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Italy, or Spain
Fluent in English
Professional experience; at least 2 years of full-time journalistic experience desirable
Intercultural experience – living, working, travel, reporting, research trips or study of the respective region

Costs:

The lodging, meals and workshop materials will be covered.
Participants are expected to provide their own health insurance and bear the visa costs if they need visa to enter Jordan.
The organizing team will be refunding travel expenses based on submitted receipts and tickets.
The Organizers expect participants to book flights immediately after confirmation and travel information has been shared. We cannot cover higher costs, if flights are booked at a later moment and prices have increased.
