TIM HETHERINGTON GRANT for Professional Photographers

Application Deadline: October 17 2013

The Tim Hetherington Grant is an annual grant awarded to a photographer to finalize a project on a human rights theme.

The grant is open to professional photographers who have participated in a recent World Press Photo Contest and applications are currently being accepted.

The grant celebrates the legacy of photojournalist and filmmaker Tim Hetherington, who was killed when a group of journalists came under fire during fighting between rebels and General Gaddafi’s forces in Misrata, Libya in April 2011. The Tim Hetherington Grant is a joint initiative of World Press Photo and Human Rights Watch, and is supported by Tim’s parents.

INFORMATION AND APPLICATION

The application process is open to all professional photographers who have participated in a World Press Photo competition between 2008 and 2013. The grant is intended to support a photographer in completing an existing project on a human rights theme. You can read more about the 2013 grant in the press release.

Human Rights Watch, our partner in the Tim Hetherington Grant, defines ‘human rights’ in the following way: “At the very heart of a human rights issue or theme lies the critical factor of responsibility – some government, rebel group, institution, or individual is responsible for what is happening.”
