Applications are now open for the 2027 SAB/BER Economist Internship Programme. The programme provides practical training to appropriately qualified graduates to function as economists in the public and private sectors. Successful candidates will work alongside BER economists for one year, gaining experience in business-oriented macroeconomic analysis. A dedicated Data Science for Economics pathway is available for qualified candidates.
Employment Opportunity
- Full-time employment with the South African Reserve Bank (SARB)
- One-year training placement at the Bureau for Economic Research (BER), Stellenbosch
- Training period: January 2027 – December 2027

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be a South African citizen
- Hold an Honours or Master’s degree in Economics (by January 2027)
- Have studied Macroeconomics at postgraduate level
- Be fluent in English
- Possess excellent communication and writing skills
Data Science for Economics Track
Applicants interested in the Data Science stream must have:
- Quantitative and/or programming subjects
- A GitHub profile (recommended/required)
Selection Process
Shortlisted candidates will undergo:
- Psychometric assessments
- Reference checks
- Security clearance
Selection will also consider SARB’s workforce diversification objectives.
Programme Details
- The successful candidate(s) will be full-time employed by the SARB but will spend their first year in training at the BER in Stellenbosch (from January 2027 to December 2027). Candidates will also receive a competitive salary during the training year.
- Interviews will take place in July and August. Shortlisted candidates will be subjected to psychometric assessments, an appropriate reference check, and security clearance as part of the selection process. Suitable candidates will be selected based on the SARB’s commitment to diversifying its workforce.
