Application Deadline: October 14, 2025
Applications are now open for the 2025 HumAngle Fellowship on Reporting Conflict and Missing Persons. HumAngle, in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), is calling for applications from middle-career and senior journalists in Nigeria for a 3-day fellowship on reporting conflict and missing persons. The fellowship will be held in Abuja between November 4–6, 2025, with participants arriving in Abuja on November 3 and departing on November 7.
All participants must commit to the training in its entirety. It will be an enjoyable but rigorous experience, so be sure to apply only if your job is willing to let you take time off for the training. Freelancers are welcome to apply: we don’t discriminate.
Through the 3-day rigorous training, 10 selected senior and mid-career journalists from Nigeria will be introduced to a wide range of sessions that will better equip them to report these stories in trauma-informed and ethical ways.
Some of the areas to be covered are:
- The nitty-gritty of human-centred conflict reporting: What are some trauma-informed frameworks to use when speaking with vulnerable sources? How do you get them to open up? How should the editing process go? What is chiseled out and what remains?
- Understanding and reporting Nigeria’s missing persons problem: What is the scope of the problem? What do the laws say? How do we interact with victims’ families?
- Psychosocial best practices to keep in mind for journalists and sources alike.
- What is the place of radicalism and extremism in all this?
Requirements
HumAngle is looking for conflict reporters who think very deeply about the craft and mechanics of the profession.
- If you spend time reciting a sentence over and over again to weigh whether or not it rolls off the tongue smoothly enough, we want to hear from you.
- If you spend hours after an interview with a sensitive source, thinking how best you can protect them in the storytelling without compromising the story’s integrity, we want to hear from you.
- If you find yourself constantly thinking before an interview: how can I ensure this source is as comfortable with me as possible? Hit the apply button below immediately.
- If you agonize over the possibility of retraumatizing victims of violence during an interview, you should have sent in your application yesterday.
Benefits
- The fellowship is fully funded; all costs, including flights, accommodation, and meals, will be covered by HumAngle.
