Application Deadline: February 16, 2026
Applications are now open for the 2026 DW Akademie French-speaking Master’s in International Journalism Programme . The MFJI is aimed particularly at media professionals from French-speaking countries that are partners in German development cooperation in North and West Africa. These include Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Benin, and Côte d’Ivoire. Applications from candidates permanently residing in one of these countries will therefore be given priority.
DW Akademie and EPJT have launched a French-language Master’s program in journalism starting in 2024. The French-language Master’s in International Journalism (MFJI) is primarily aimed at media professionals from French-speaking countries in North and West Africa.
Each year, ten candidates are selected following a two-phase process: an eligibility phase contingent upon approval of the application file, and an admission phase consisting of an oral interview and a written test.
Benefits
- All admitted candidates receive a merit-based scholarship covering tuition and living expenses.
Selection criteria
To apply, you must meet the following criteria:
1. Higher education diploma obtained less than 10 years ago
To be considered for your application, you must hold a higher education degree at the bachelor’s level (180 credits, equivalent to three years of university studies) or higher. Your most recent degree must have been awarded within the last 10 years by the application deadline.
Although open to all disciplines, applications from graduates in Information and Communication Sciences will be given special attention.
2. Professional experience
You must demonstrate at least one year of professional experience in media and/or journalism. Internships, volunteer work, and other forms of volunteering are considered. You must provide supporting documentation in the form of a work certificate or a certificate of internship, volunteer work, or other form of volunteering.
3. Proficiency in French: level C1/C2
A valid C1 or C2 level French language certification (DALF or TCF for the general public) must be included with the application. Unless exempt, the French test or diploma is mandatory.
The following are exempt from the French test:
- Candidates holding a French baccalaureate (obtained in France or in an AEFE-approved institution).
- Candidates holding a French higher education diploma obtained in France.
- Candidates originating from countries where French is the official language and whose language of diploma and/or work is French (French-language courses, French-language media…).
It is also appreciated:
- Knowledge of English: level B1 (independent user).
A minimum B1 level of English is an advantage for studying in Germany and following courses taught in English. However, formal English language certification is not required. If you do not have a B1 level at the time of application, and your application is successful, you will be strongly encouraged to take an English course in your country of residence before starting the Master’s program.
