2014 Google Code-in Contest for Pre-University Students (Win a Trip to Google’s Headquarters in Mountain View, California)

Application Deadline: January 19, 2015.

The Google Code-in is a contest to introduce pre-university students (ages 13-17) to the many kinds of contributions that make open source software development possible. The contest runs from December 1, 2014 to January 19, 2015.

These tasks include:

  1. Code: Tasks related to writing or refactoring code
  2. Documentation/Training: Tasks related to creating/editing documents and helping others learn more
  3. Outreach/Research Tasks related to community management, outreach/marketing or studying problems and recommending solutions
  4. Quality Assurance: Tasks related to testing and ensuring code is of high quality
  5. User Interface: Tasks related to user experience research or user interface design and interaction

Students earn one point for each task completed. Students will receive a certificate for completing one task and can earn a t-shirt when they complete three tasks.

Eligibility:

To participate in the Contest, you must provide written proof that:

(a) You are at least 13 years of age and no older than 17 years of age as of the time the Contest begins; and

(b) You are currently enrolled in a pre-university (high school or secondary school) program; and

(c) Your parent or legal guardian consents to your participation and agrees to these Contest Rules.

 

Requirements to Enter.

In order to enter the Contest, you must have

(a) access to the Internet,

(b) a Google Account,

(c) a valid postal address, and

(d) a valid email address.

How to Enter.

3.1 Registration. To enter the Contest, you must register at the Contest website, located at http://www.google-melange.com/gci/homepage/google/gci2014, and create a profile in Melange (the website used to administer the Contest) by providing the required information about yourself. Registration times are listed on the Contest website. You are responsible for determining the corresponding time in your time zone.

(a) First, sign in to your Google Account. If you do not have a Google account, you can create one without charge from Google. If you already have a Gmail address, you can just sign in to your Gmail account.

(b) Second, sign up for a Melange profile at http://www.google-melange.com/gci/homepage/google/gci2014 or by clicking on the link on the Contest website during the registration period while you are logged into your Google account. You must attach your signed parental consent form and proof of enrollment in a pre-university program in your Melange Profile.

Prize:

Prizes for Completed Entries.

(a) You are eligible to receive one certificate with an approximate value of $2 USD if you submit at least one complete entry.

(b) You are eligible to receive one t-shirt with an approximate value of $14 USD if you submit 3 or more complete entries.

 Prizes for Finalists.

  • If you are selected as a Finalist, you are eligible to receive one hooded sweatshirt with an approximate value of $35 USD.
  • Prizes for Grand Prize Winners. If you are selected as a Grand Prize Winner, you are eligible to attend a Grand Prize Winner’s Trip to Google’s Headquarters in Mountain View, California, USA for you and one parent or legal guardian.
  • The prize consists of round-trip coach air transportation for you and your parent or legal guardian from the major airport nearest to your residence, hotel accommodations for two people for four nights, and catered meals during the event plus an additional $100 USD for food.
  • Google will arrange the hotel accommodations at a hotel of Google’s choice. Certain blackout dates apply. You are responsible for all other expenses, including obtaining a passport or visa if applicable. You cannot change the travel schedule once it has been arranged. Prior to ticketing:
  • Substitute Prizes. Google may provide a substitute prize of equal or greater value at Google’s discretion, or where required by law, or in the event all or part of a prize becomes unavailable. If you are unable to attend the Grand Prize Winner’s Trip due to required National School Exams, Google may award an alternate prize.
  • At the end of the contest each of the open source organizations will name two (2) grand prize winners for their organization based upon the students’ body of work.
  • The grand prize winners will receive a trip to Google’s Mountain View, California, USA Headquarters for themselves and a parent or legal guardian for an award ceremony, an opportunity to meet with Google engineers, explore the Google campus and have a fun day in the San Francisco, California sun
