Call for Proposals: World Bank Group/RUFORUM Strengthening Higher Agricultural Education in Africa (SHAEA)

The governments of six African countries, the World Bank Group, and the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) are calling for proposals from eligible higher education institutions to become a Regional Anchor University (RAU) with a focus of addressing skills and knowledge gaps in agriculture facing Sub-Saharan Africa.

The proposals are part of the preparations for the Strengthening Higher Agricultural Education in Africa (SHAEA) project, which aims to strengthen linkages between selected African universities and regional agricultural sector needs for developing required human resources needed to accelerate agri-food system transformation in Africa in six countries across the continent.

The six participating countries are Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi and Mozambique. With an expected $190 million in financing from the International Development Association (IDA), the project will support the selected universities to become RAUs designed to meet regional agricultural sector needs in human resource development required for accelerating this transformation through partnerships with other tertiary education institutions, including post-secondary agricultural vocational institutions, and key agricultural sector actors both public and private.

SHAEA complements the Africa Centres of Excellence for Development Impact (ACE Impact) project with a focus exclusively on agricultural higher education, and particularly emphasizes its integration with the agricultural sector. The project aligns with the region’s development priorities as outlined in: Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want; the Science, Technology, and Innovation Strategy for Africa 2024; the 2014 Malabo Declaration on Accelerated Agricultural Growth and Transformation; and the global Sustainable Development Goals.

All proposals must also address at least two of the following six regional key gap areas:

  • Agribusiness and Entrepreneurship
  • Agri-food Systems and Nutrition
  • Rural Innovation and Agricultural Extension
  • Agricultural Risk Management and Climate Change Proofing
  • Agricultural Policy Analysis
  • Statistical Analysis, Foresight and Data Management

How to Apply:

As a regional project, SHAEA will be governed by its Regional Steering Committee (RSC), including government representatives from participating countries, and facilitated by its Regional Facilitation Unit (RFU) – RUFORUM.

All proposals must be submitted to the RFU through their respective governments.

Ashoka ChangemakerXchange Summit 2018 for young social innovators in West Africa (Fully Funded to Ghana)

The ChangemakerXchange is a global collaboration platform for young social innovators. It gathers some of the world’s most exciting changemakers at impact retreats in beautiful spaces around the world for the exchange and co-creation of ideas.

ChangemakerXchange brings together some of the world’s top social innovators, who have dedicated their lives to solving a social problem and have the skills and mindset to collaborate for collective impact.

The summit will take place from 15TH OF OCTOBER 2018 evening until 19TH OF OCTOBER 2018 morning and participants must be able to attend all days.

Requirements:

Applicants for ChangemakerXchange:

  • Must be aged between 18 and 35. Please note a limited number of three places is available for 29- and 35-year-old applicants.
  • Should lead, co-lead, have founded or co-founded their own social venture which is up and running and addresses a relevant social problem. We are unable to accept applicants with an idea only or who are volunteering for an organisation.
  • Must have a good level of English that enables them to understand, present, and collaborate throughout the summit.
  • Should have the skills and know-how to be part of a special community of collaborative young social entrepreneurs and be willing to play an active role within this community.
  • Must come from BENIN, BURKINA FASO, CAMEROON, CÔTE D’IVOIRE, The GAMBIA, GHANA, GUINEA, GUINEA BISSAU, LIBERIA, MALI, NIGER, NIGERIA, SENEGAL, SIERRA LEONE, TOGO.

DNDi Scientific Journalism Workshop 2018 for health/science journalists (Fully Funded to Kampala, Uganda)

DNDi would like to invite health/science journalists from Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe to submit their applications for a media workshop to be held on 1st – 4th October 2018 in Kampala, Uganda.

This is a three-day, all-expense paid media workshop to help reporters and editors from East, Central, and Southern Africa to better understand neglected diseases in the region and grasp the science behind efforts to develop drugs for these diseases. The workshop will allow participants to:

  1. Learn more about science journalism and sharpen their skills
  2. Learn more about research and development (R&D) in Africa and better grasp the ins and outs of clinical trials/research
  3. Broaden their knowledge of neglected tropical diseases, including emerging threats such as antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
  4. Build a network of valued sources in clinical research in the region.

The sessions will include both discussion and practical sessions to expand journalists’ knowledge of neglected disease R&D. The workshop will take place during the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) Stakeholder Meeting in Kampala, Uganda, which will feature researchers and clinicians from a number of countries in the region working on sleeping sickness, leishmaniasis, filarial diseases (river blindness), mycetoma, paediatric HIV, AMR, and other neglected diseases

  • Professional Science/health Journalists working in broadcast, print, and online media may apply.
  • Science/health journalists working in the following countries are eligible.

Fellowship Worth

Funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), Commonwealth Shared Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK. These scholarships are offered under six themes:

  • You should apply to study one of the taught Master’s courses offered in the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship scheme. African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Co-operative Master’s Program 2018/2019 Scholarships (Fully Funded)

The co-operative version of the AIMS Structured Master’s program, offered only at AIMS Senegal, AIMS Cameroon and AIMS Rwanda builds on the core AIMS Master’s program and leads to the same AIMS Structured Master’s degree in mathematical sciences.

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is an academic network that enables Africa’s brightest students to become innovators that advances scientific, educational and economic self-sufficiency

The 18-month program takes a work-integrated learning approach by combining course work with practical industry experience. This allows students to apply their scientific knowledge to real world problems while gaining work experience in an industrial environment. The program enables students to develop the necessary professional skills to transition from academic studies to progressive careers in industry (defined as private or public businesses, government, non-governmental organisations, and civil society).

The Co-operative Master’s program includes two work placements of three and four months throughout the regular coursework. Successful completion of all coursework and both work placements is required for graduation.

The Co-operative Master’s program is designed specifically to prepare students for work in the areas of big data and IT security. Applicants are requested to choose their preferred area of focus.

Eligibility

  • Applicants should hold, or anticipate completing by the start date of the AIMS course, a 4-year university degree in mathematics, or any science or engineering subject with a significant mathematics component.

Requirements:

  • AIMS offers an intensive one-year postgraduate course leading to a Master’s degree in Mathematical Sciences.
  • The specific qualifications (and the awarding institution) will depend on which AIMS centre you are attending.

Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships are for PhD candidates from low and middle income Commonwealth countries, to spend up to 12 months at a UK university as part of their doctoral studies in their home country.

Funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK. These scholarships are offered under six themes:

  1. Science and technology for development
  2. Strengthening health systems and capacity
  3. Promoting global prosperity
  4. Strengthening global peace, security and governance
  5. Strengthening resilience and response to crises
  6. Access, inclusion and opportunity

Eligibility

To apply for these scholarships, you must:

HOW TO APPLY
  • You should apply to study at a UK university which has a part funding agreement with the CSC. Part funding agreements are at the discretion of individual universities. ONASSIS FELLOWHIPS PROGRAM 2018/2019 FOR INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARS to Study in Greece (Funded)

The Onassis Foundation announces its twenty-fourth (24th) annual Program of scholarships for the academic year 2018-2019 which is addressed to non-Greeks, Professors, Postdoctoral Researchers and Ph.D. Candidates for research in Greece on topics linked to greek culture, society or economy. A total of ten (10) scholarships will be awarded from which three (3) scholarships will be allocated to university professors of all academic ranks, three (3) scholarships to post-graduate researchers and four (4) scholarships to PhD candidates.

In 2001 the Foundation, following the successful publication in Greek of the Greek Scholars’ Album, produced the first bilingual (Greek-English) Album of Foreign Scholars, which records their academic and professional progress.

The number of scholarships awarded by the Foundation to foreigners varies from year to year. On average, 35 scholarships are awarded annually. During the 22 years of the Program’s operation (1995 – 2017), 883 research grants and educational scholarships have been awarded, amounting to $ 11.307.812

Applications for the 2018 TechWomen program are now being accepted.

TechWomen empowers, connects and supports the next generation of women leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) from Africa, Central and South Asia, and the Middle East by providing them the access and opportunity needed to advance their careers, pursue their dreams, and inspire women and girls in their communities.

TechWomen partners with the most innovative companies in the San Francisco Bay Area to host emerging women leaders for mentorship and cultural exchange. Participants hail from 20 countries in Africa, Central and South Asia and the Middle East and are recognized for their achievements and potential to excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Through mentorship and exchange, TechWomen strengthens participants’ professional capacity, increases mutual understanding between key networks of professionals, and expands girls’ interest in STEM careers by exposing them to female role models.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must

  • Be women with, at minimum, two years full-time professional experience in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. Please note that internships and other unpaid work experience does not count toward the two-year professional experience requirement.
  • Have, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree/four-year university degree or equivalent.
  • Be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Be citizens and permanent residents of Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Palestinian Territories, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan or Zimbabwe at the time of application and while participating in the program.
  • Be eligible to obtain a U.S. J-1 exchange visitor visa.
  • Not have applied for an immigrant visa to the United States (other than the Diversity Immigrant Visa, also known as the “visa lottery”) in the past five years.
  • Not hold U.S. citizenship or be a U.S. legal permanent resident.

Preference will be given to applicants who

  • Demonstrate themselves as emerging leaders in their chosen professional track through their work experience, volunteer experience, community activities and education.
  • Are committed to return to their home countries to share what they have learned and mentor women and girls.
  • Have limited or no prior experience in the United States.
  • Have a proven record of voluntary or public service in their communities.
  • Have a demonstrated track record of entrepreneurialism and commitment to innovation.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to participate in exchange programs, welcome opportunities for mentoring and new partnership development, and exhibit confidence and maturity.

Covered Costs

The following costs are covered by the TechWomen program:

  • Roundtrip international airfare from participant home country to the United States
  • Domestic airfare from San Francisco to Washington, D.C.
  • Housing in San Francisco or Mountain View, California during the mentorship
  • Meals and incidentals
  • Hotel stay in Washington, D.C.
  • Ground transportation to the participant’s host company
  • Local transportation to group program events in the San Francisco Bay Area and Washington, D.C.

Participants are responsible for the cost of any non program activities such as independent sightseeing and cultural events, as well as any non program-related domestic or international travel.

Meal Stipend

The TechWomen program provides a stipend for each participant to cover meals during the program.

Housing

TechWomen participants will be housed in San Francisco or Mountain View, California, depending on the location of the participant’s host company. Participants will share an apartment with a fellow Emerging Leader. Each participant will have her own private bedroom, while the living room and kitchen will be shared.

The TechWomen program is unable to accommodate participants’ spouses, children, or other dependents.

The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the competition to select highly qualified candidates for summer 2018 Study of the United States Institutes (SUSI) for Scholars.  Study of the U.S. Institutes for Scholars will take place at various colleges, universities, and institutions throughout the United States over the course of six weeks beginning in or after June 2018.

Each Institute includes a four week academic residency component and up to two weeks of an integrated study tour. SUSI Institutes are six weeks intensive post-graduate level academic programs whose purpose is to provide foreign university lecturers and other scholars the opportunity to deepen their understanding of U.S. society, culture, values, and institutions.  The ultimate goal of these Institutes is to strengthen curricula and to enhance the quality of teaching about the U.S. in academic institutions abroad. The program will provide funding for round trip airfare to the United States, a living allowance, and health insurance.

Requirements:

  • Applicants should be mid-career, typically between the ages of 30-50 with strong English level abilities, substantial knowledge of the thematic area of the Institute or a related field, and little or no prior experience in the United States.
  • SUSI Institutes will be held in the following themes: American Politics and Political Thought Contemporary American Literature, Journalism and Media, Religious Pluralism in the United States, U.S. Culture and Society, and U.S. Foreign Policy.

Orange Social Venture Prize 2017 for Innovative Startups in Africa and Middle East (50,000 Euros in Prizes)

The Orange Social Venture Prize 2017 contest aims to reward the best innovative and socially responsible business project in Africa and the Middle East. This 7th edition unfolds in two phases: first the candidates participate to a national competition, then an international jury gives a grand prize to the best national winners. Each time, the viewers of this site have a chance to add a name to the shortlist through a voting process.

The Orange Social Venture Prize aims to promote social innovation by supporting development through information and communication technologies (ICT). In addition to funding of up to 25,000 euros, Orange will provide support to the three winners of the Grand Prize for six months from business and telecoms professionals.

As in previous years, the OSVPAM will be awarded to innovative projects which make use of information and communication technologies to improve living conditions for the peoples of Africa and the Middle East in fields such as health, finance, education and agriculture.

New for this 7th edition, the competition will start with a national phase during which each of Orange’s 17 participating subsidiaries will examine projects submitted in its country and will designate three winners. The next phase will be an international one in which the winners of each country – 51 in all – will compete before an international panel of judges for the OSVPAM Grand Prize, with three winners receiving their awards during the AfricaCom Awards Ceremony in Cape Town, South Africa, on 8 November 2017.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Entrepreneurs over the age of 21 and start-ups operating for less than three years can qualify for the Prize. There are no nationality requirements.
  • The projects must be implemented in one of the following countries in which Orange operates in Africa and the Middle-East, and listed in the Contest Rules.
  • The eligible countries are: Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Senegal, Botswana, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Mali, Guinea Conakry, Guinea Bissau, Madagascar, Niger, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Jordan and Burkina Faso.

Benefits

  • In addition to national prizes, the three international winners will receive 25,000 euros, 15,000 euros and 10,000 euros respectively, along with support from professionals in start-up creation and funding.
Awards For the international Grand-Prix awards are the following:
  • 1st prize: the payment of an amount of €25, 000 (twenty-five thousand euros)
  • 2nd prize: the payment of an amount of €15,000 (fifteen thousand euros)
  • 3rd prize: the payment of an amount of €10, 000 (ten thousand euros).
  • Furthermore, accompaniment will be proposed to the 3 international Grand-Prix winners in the form of monthly telephone meetings during which the winners will present a progress report.
  • They will thus benefit from advice given by young company creation and financing professionals. This accompaniment will be proposed to the 3 international Grand-Prix winners during the six (6) months following attribution of the awards.
  • For the national prize, each subsidiary of Orange will offer lots and / or accompaniment specific to the country.

Selection Criteria:

  • The social and/ or environmental impact; the Projects will be evaluated according to the significance of their social and/or environmental impact (number of jobs created, effects on health, education, energy needs, etc.).
  • The degree of innovation provided in the use of digital communications resource (landline or mobile telecommunications) to enable the product or service to be launched.
  • The possibility of extending distribution of the product to several countries.
  • The financial viability of the project by succeeding in self-financing the project at the end of its launch period.
  • The realistic and operational character of the project (motivation of the team, contacts with the partners of the project, etc.)

Government of ​Brunei Darussalam Scholarships 2017/2018 for Foreign Students (Fully Funded to Brunei)

 The Government of Brunei Darussalam is offering annual scholarships under a special scholarship award scheme, for the 2017/2018 academic session. Tenable in Brunei Darussalam, the aim of the scholarship awards is to provide applicants, with the opportunity to study at University of Brunei Darussalam [UBD], Islam Sultan Sharif Ali university [UNISSA] and Brunei Institute of Technology [ITB].

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be citizens of ASEAN, OIC, Commonwealth Member Countries and others are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be between the ages of 18 – 25 for undergraduate programmes and not exceed 35 for postgraduate programmes on the 31 July 2017.
  • The award is not eligible, to Brunei Permanent Residents and foreigners residing in Brunei Darussalam.

Scholarship Worth:

The scholars are exempted from paying tuition fees and other appropriate compulsory fees as determined by the university for the duration of the programme.

  • One return economy class air-ticket for the most economically viable route to Brunei Darussalam will be determined by the Brunei Darussalam Government. No additional assistance will be provided towards other travel expenses.

Allowances payable will include:

  • Monthly personal allowance of BND500.00
  • Annual Book Allowance BND600.00
  • Monthly food allowance of BND150.00
  • Upon completion of the program, Baggage allowance to a maximum institution of BND250.00 to ASEAN region and BND500.00 to non ASEAN region.
  • An accommodation at respective institution residential college is provided. If the scholar opts not to live in the provided accommodation, no additional allowance will be given in the lieu of board and transport
  • Outpatient medical and/or dental treatment is at any Brunei government hospitals, However an administrative charge is payable for each consultation with the government general practitioner or specialist.
  • Should the scholar seek further medical or dental treatments at any private hospital or clinic, all expenses are to be borne by scholars themselves.

  • Be women with, at minimum, two years full-time professional experience in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. Please note that internships and other unpaid work experience does not count toward the two-year professional experience requirement.
  • Have, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree/four-year university degree or equivalent.
  • Be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Be citizens and permanent residents of Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Palestinian Territories, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan or Zimbabwe at the time of application and while participating in the program.
  • Be eligible to obtain a U.S. J-1 exchange visitor visa.
  • Not have applied for an immigrant visa to the United States or participated in a visa lottery in the past five years.
  • Not hold U.S. citizenship or be a U.S. legal permanent resident

Preference will be given to applicants who

  • Demonstrate themselves as emerging leaders in their chosen professional track through their work experience, volunteer experience, community activities and education.
  • Are committed to return to their home countries to share what they have learned and mentor women and girls.
  • Have limited or no prior experience in the United States.
  • Have a proven record of voluntary or public service in their communities.
  • Have a demonstrated track record of entrepreneurialism and commitment to innovation.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to participate in exchange programs, welcome opportunities for mentoring and new partnership development, and exhibit confidence and maturity.

Covered Costs

The following costs are covered by the TechWomen program:

  • Roundtrip international airfare from participant home country to the United States
  • Domestic airfare from San Francisco to Washington, D.C.
  • Housing in San Francisco or Mountain View, California during the mentorship
  • Meals and incidentals
  • Hotel stay in Washington, D.C.
  • Ground transportation to the participant’s host company
  • Local transportation to group program events in the San Francisco Bay Area and Washington, D.C.

Participants are responsible for the cost of any non program activities such as independent sightseeing and cultural events, as well as any non program-related domestic or international travel.

Meal Stipend

The TechWomen program provides a stipend for each participant to cover meals during the program.

Housing

TechWomen participants will be housed in San Francisco or Mountain View, California, depending on the location of the participant’s host company. Participants will share an apartment with a fellow Emerging Leader. Each participant will have her own private bedroom, while the living room and kitchen will be shared.

British High Commission Cameroon Women’s Scholarship 2016/2017 for Cameroonian Master’s Degree Students – (FCFA 1 MILLION Worth)

The British High Commission in Yaounde- Cameroon, is announcing to the general public that the 2016/2017 edition of the Cameroon Women’s Scholarship has now been launched.

The Cameroon Women’s Scholarship targets women with strong leadership potential, who possess the academic excellence to pursue a Master’s degree, but face a significant financial barrier to continuing their studies.

The Scholarship is funded by the British High Commission in Cameroon which also manages the scheme in partnership with the Cameroon Women’s Scholarship Alumni and the Cameroon Chevening Alumni Association.

The Award

The British High Commission’s Cameroon Women’s Scholarship will award twenty (20) scholarships for candidates starting a master’s degree course at any recognized university in Cameroon for studies related to Commonwealth values and principles. The award is a lump sum of one million francs (FCFA 1 MILLION) and two mandatory leadership training for all laureates.

Course of Study

The areas of studies in which candidates are sought for 2016-17 are as follows:

  • Human Rights
  • Rule of Law /Governance
  • Information and Communication Technology
  • Science and Technology
  • Development studies
  • Media Management and Legislation
  • Security (International Security/Security Management/Terrorism/Regional Development/Conflict Resolution/Peace Studies.
  • Public Health

Eligibility Requirements

The Cameroon Women Scholarship is open to those who meet the following criteria:

  1. must have secured an admission for the 2015/2016 academic year in any higher education institution of learning in Cameroon by 31st January 2016. Failure in securing admission by this date will lead to the withdrawal of scholarship.
  2. the start date of the applicants’ chosen course must fall within the first half of the 2016/2017 academic year.
  3. must be a national of Cameroon
  4. must hold an undergraduate degree (an equivalent of 3 – 4 years undergraduate studies) in any field with grade of at least a Second Class-upper (Hons)
  5. must have at least two (2) years work experience by 30 September 2016

There is no age limit for Cameroon Women’s Scholarship.

Candidates are to be assessed against the following criteria:

  1. have the personal, intellectual and interpersonal qualities necessary for leadership in their home country
  2. be motivated to make a career leading to a position of leadership in their own countries within 10 years of their Scholarship
  3. be committed to networking to find global solutions to key development issues
  4. be able to use their studies and experience to benefit themselves, their country and the FCO
  5. be capable of successfully undertaking and completing their proposed course

NB: Application and personal statements MUST be in English Language irrespective of the language of instruction of the candidate and the school she will be attending.

How to apply

To apply, provide the following:

  1. A completed scholarship application form (see below)
  2. A personal statement – a one-page statement/essay about yourself, your leadership potential, accomplishments and career goals (maximum of 800 words.)
  3. An updated CV (include contact details of two referees maximum of 2 pages using font 12 Times New Roman.) You will be disqualified if you do not stick to the guidance.

NB: Only the above three documents are needed at the first stage. Candidates shortlisted for interview will be required to submit copies of university level transcripts and all academic certificates.

2017 Commonwealth Scholarships for Master’s and PhD study in the UK (Fully Funded)

Commonwealth Scholarships for Master’s and PhD study in the UK are offered for citizens of developing Commonwealth countries. These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), with the aim of contributing to the UK’s international development aims and wider overseas interests, supporting excellence in UK higher education, and sustaining the principles of the Commonwealth.

You can apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship for the following levels of study:

  • Master’s (one-year courses only)
  • PhD

Eligibility

To apply for these scholarships, you must:

  • Be a Commonwealth citizen, refugee, or British protected person
  • Be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country
  • Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2017
  • By October 2017, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard, or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)
COMMONWEALTH PhD SCHOLARSHIPS
  • Up to 36 months’ support towards completion of a three-year full-time doctoral postgraduate qualification at an eligible UK university.

COMMONWEALTH MASTER’S SCHOLARSHIPS

  • 12 months’ support towards completion of a full-time taught postgraduate qualification at an eligible UK university.
  • The CSC funds one-year Master’s programmes only, and does not fund MBAs.

Scholarship Worth:

Each scholarship provides:
  • Approved airfare from your home country to the UK and return at the end of your award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor usually the cost of journeys made before your award is finally confirmed)
  • Approved tuition and examination fees
  • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,034 per month, or £1,268 per month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at 2015-2016 levels)
  • Thesis grant towards the cost of preparing a thesis or dissertation, where applicable
  • Warm clothing allowance
  • Study travel grant towards the costs of study-related travel within the UK or overseas
  • For PhD Scholars, fieldwork grant towards the cost of fieldwork undertaken overseas (usually the cost of one economy class return airfare to your fieldwork location)
  • For PhD Scholars, paid mid-term visit (airfare) to your home country (unless you have claimed (or intend to claim) spouse and/or child allowances during your scholarship, or have received a return airfare to your home country for fieldwork)
  • If your scholarship is at least 18 months long, the following family allowances:
  • Spouse allowance of £222 per month if you and your spouse are living together at the same address in the UK (unless your spouse is also in receipt of a scholarship)
  • Child allowance of £222 per month for the first child, and £109 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if you are accompanied by your spouse and children and they are living with you at the same address in the UK
  • If you are widowed, divorced, or a single parent (irrespective of the length of your scholarship), child allowance of £444 per month for the first child, and £109 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if you are accompanied by your children and they are living with you at the same address in the UK

Afya Bora Consortium Fellowships 2017/2018 in Global Health Leadership

The Afya Bora Fellowship in Global Health Leadership works to fill an identified gap in training for African and U.S. health professionals. This innovative 12-month fellowship will prepare African and U.S. health professionals to lead and manage major health programs in African countries

Afya Bora Consortium Fellowships in Global Health Leadership will be accepting applications for the 2017–2018 Fellowship year, beginning August 2016. There are 20 positions available for health professionals interested in a 12-month fellowship (starting July 2017) in one of our African partner countries (Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Cameroon).

The Afya Bora Consortium is a partnership of eight academic health centers, five in Africa and four in the United States. The five pairs are:

  • University of Nairobi and the University of Washington
  • University of Botswana and the University of Pennsylvania
  • Makerere University and Johns Hopkins University
  • Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences and the University of California, San Francisco
  • University of Buea and Johns Hopkins University

The Afya Bora Fellowship will provide trainees with a set of practical skills that will prepare them for leadership positions in government, non-government, and academic health institutions in developing countries.

The 12 month training program has 2 components:

  • A eight-week Core Curriculum, plus four distance learning modules
  • Two four-and-a-half month assignments to sites, such as Ministries of Health, NGOs, etc. in partner African countries.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to apply all applicants MUST meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a citizen or permanent resident of Botswana, Cameroon, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda or the USAND
  2. Meet ONE of the following education requirements
  • Medical applicants need to have a M.D. or MBChB with a MMed or Masters degree in related field.
  • Nursing applicants need to have a Masters degree in Nursing, Public Health or a related field (PhD preferred), or substantial work experience.
  • Other Public Health professionals (those without a clinical degree) must have a Doctoral degree in Public Health or a related field

The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) is the development finance institution established by the Member States of OPEC in 1976 as a collective channel of aid to the developing countries. MEETAfrica (European mobilization for entrepreneurship in Africa) is a European program to support entrepreneurship African diasporas, coordinated by Expertise France and financed by the European Union .

Whom:

It is for students at the end of university studies, young researchers or young qualified professionals, originating in one of the partner countries (Algeria, Cameroon, Mali, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia) and residing in France or Germany who wish create an innovative entrepreneurial activity in their country of origin.

Expertise France, the Institute of Research for Development (IRD), Campus France and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammentarbeit (GIZ) , offer to share the accompanying measures implemented earlier  through the MEETAfrica project (Mobilization European for entrepreneurship in Africa).

This program aims to support (80) African entrepreneurs graduates of French or German teaching in the creation, in their country of origin, companies with strong technological or carriers of innovative solutions in agriculture , industrial or services.

Funding for this support will be through the mobilization of an amount up to 15 000 euros (benefit mainly possibly a limited number of missions in the host communities), consistent with the sheet road on the draft

MEETAfrica is part of the Rabat Process, Euro-African Dialogue on Migration and Development . With a budget of 1.7 million euros, is financed under the Facility Migration and Mobility Dialogue (MMD) managed by the International Centre for Mobility Policy Development (ICMPD) and funded by the European Union.

  • The MEETAfrica Program therefore aims to support 80 African entrepreneurs graduates of the French or German teaching in the creation, in their country of origin, companies with strong technological or carrier solutions
  • Innovative in the agricultural, industrial or services.
  • Up to 65 African entrepreneurs resident in France school graduates French will be joined
  • Up to 15 African entrepreneurs resident in Germany school graduates German will be joined

Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation STEM Prize Competition 2016 for Young Africans ($USD 10,000 Cash Prize)

The STEM Prize was established to encourage young Cameroonians and Africans, especially girls and young women to pursue careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

This competition brings together young scholars from both secondary and tertiary schools (between the ages of 13 and 21 years old) to design projects that have the greatest potential of positively changing their communities. Based on the recommendations of the evaluators and judges at the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation, winners will be selected for the eventual prizes.

A few years ago, the Government of Cameroon (GoC) launched its strategy to make Cameroon an emerging economy by the year 2035. For this vision to be realised, Cameroon needs to produce more professionals in the field of STEM by increasing the number of youths studying courses in STEM from 10% to at least 30%.

Hence the aim of the STEM Prize Competition is to raise awareness on the importance of STEM to an economy and encourage more youths to get into careers in STEM, consequently, building a foundation for Cameroon’s 2035 vision to be achieved.

Program Design

The STEM Prize competition will consider applications from teams/groups of 3-5 members age between 13 and 21 years old. Each team will design a project that has the greatest potential of positively improving their communities. The best projects will be chosen and the teams will be invited to spend 3 days at the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation where they will participate in several educational trainings. Prizes will be given out to the successful teams at the end of the competition.

Eligibility to Participate

  • To be eligible for The STEM Prize Competition, applicants must be between the ages of 13 and 21 years old and be citizens of CEMAC countries (Cameroon, Chad, Central Africa Republic, Congo, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea). An application must be made by a team or group of at least 3 people or at most 5 people.

Project Requirements

Project proposals will follow the outline below:

  • Names and Community(ies) of applicants
  • Title of project
  • Identification and elaboration of community problem
  • Proposed solution and illicit method of solving problem based on recommendations
  • Budget Planning
  • Partners and timeframe of project realisation
  • Evaluation of project.

Invitation to Top Teams

The top teams as chosen by the evaluators/judges will be invited to the foundation’s headquarters in Yaoundé to participate in an intensive 3-day workshop full of training on research, career guidance, and project implementation. These trainings will be carried out by experts in these fields.

Prizes

A total of 5,000,000 FCFA (approximately $10,000 USD) will be awarded in prizes and will be distributed as follows:

  • Winning team: 1,500,000 FCFA ($3000 USD)
  • 1st Runner Up: 1,000,000 FCFA ($2000 USD)
  • 2nd Runner Up: 500,000 FCFA ($1000 USD)
  • Other individual prizes: 2,000,000 FCFA ($4000 USD)

The foundation will work with all winning teams to get their projects up and running.

Cameroon Human Rights Fellowship 2016 for Civil Society Organizations – $USD 1,000 Grant.

This fellowship program seeks to provide practitioners, scholars, advocates and students with the opportunity to conduct research and share knowledge in the field of human rights. Fellows will be recruited from Civil Society Organizations to spend 3 – 6 months researching, writing and building capacity to address different human rights issues. The program aims to consistently attract and build activists in the field of human rights. Fellows will eventually connect with others interested in the program with the goal of addressing the challenges in Cameroon.

Eligibility:

Candidates will have to demonstrate in their application that they think strategically and have demonstrated the leadership and management skills needed to realize their goals. In addition to this, fellows will have to demonstrate their interest to the promotion of human rights and describe a project on which the fellowship will be a significant focus to the applicant. We seek Fellows who have the creativity required to take full advantage of this unparalleled opportunity; the ability to articulate clear goals for their program; and a vision of how they might use the experience to have a consequential impact to the promotion of Human Rights in Cameroon.

To be eligible, fellowship applicants should between the ages of 17 – 35 with an interest in the promotion of human rights. Interested parties should be willing to commit to the fellowship as follows;

  1. Fellows spend time researching and writing on a specific human rights topic and inquiring in the field of human rights
  2. Through an online platform, fellows will share their experiences, challenges and key recommendations.
  3. Participate in an online moderated course on Human Rights, Peace and Conflict in our African traditional setting.
  4. Be in a position to apply what is learned and/or to share with others at the conclusion of the residency program.

Activities:

The fellowship will carry out the following activities:

  1. Coordinate research and the teaching of Human Rights in Cameroon. Fellows will conduct research and build capacity for Human Rights educators. They will produce academic research on Human Rights and interrelatedness in Cameroon.
  2. Connect fellows with Human Rights promoters: during the fellowship fellows will have the opportunity to share their work with students, using resources to increase their effectiveness and ability to advocate, practice and influence human rights activities in their communities. Fellowships last for between three to six months and each fellow will work with students who have shown remarkable interest in the promotion and protection of human rights.  The fellowship seeks to:
  3. Provide fellows with an opportunity to acquire new skills, improve their community advocacy and mobilization skills.
  4. Create and share knowledge relating to human rights
  • Enhance the skills and knowledge of fellows in a sustainable way to bring about medium and long-term social change.
  • Strengthen the capacity of human rights clinics by setting up a “Human Rights Hub”.  Through the Hub, fellows and human rights actors will collaborate on research (promoted in working papers and seminars), capacity building and policy dialogues.  This Hub will also provide the opportunity for networking between human rights promoters and activists, local and international organizations that value human rights among other key stakeholders.
  • Seed Funding: during the application process, potential fellows will be asked to submit an action plan as well as a project outline which must encompass community outreach, campaigning, awareness raising and building the capacities of communities and community leaders

The United Nations – The Nippon Foundation of Japan Fellowship Programme
~ Human Resources Development and Advancement of the Legal Order of the World’s Oceans

The objective of the fellowship is to provide opportunities for advanced education and research in the field of ocean affairs and the law of the sea, and related disciplines including marine science in support of management frameworks, to Government officials and other mid-level professionals from developing States, so that they may obtain the necessary knowledge to assist their countries to formulate comprehensive ocean policy and to implement the legal regime set out in UNCLOS and related instruments.

Upon completion of the fellowship, fellows should have an advanced awareness and understanding of key issues and best international practices in ocean affairs and are expected to return to their home-countries to contribute their experience to assist with the effective implementation of UNCLOS and related instruments and programmes.

Programme Structure

The 9-month Fellowship Programme is composed of two consecutive phases which provide Fellows with advanced and customized research and training opportunities in their chose fields:

  • Phase One: 3-month Research and Training – normally undertaken at DOALOS at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
  • Phase Two: 6-month Advanced Academic Research and Study – undertaken at one of the prestigious participating Host Institutions and under the guidance of subject matter expert(s) who have recognized in-depth expertise in the Fellows’ chosen field of study.

Eligibility Requirements:

Candidates must:

  • Be Nominated by their Government, employer or competent organization;
  • Be between the ages of 25 and 40;
  • Possess a first university degree in a related discipline, and have a demonstrated ability to undertake independent advanced research and studies in an academic context;
  • Be mid-level professionals who can demonstrate the they work directly on ocean issues;
  • Be in a position to accept placement with host institutions for a period of no less that nine consecutive months;
  • Be in a position to obtain all relevant visas including transit visas.
  • The Programme is conducted in English and can accommodate Francophone fellows.

Organisation of Islamic Cooperation OIC is pleased to announce the first edition of Ramadan Social Media Photo Competition. The competition is open to all citizens of an OIC member state aged 18 and above. The winning pictures can depict social, economic and cultural aspect of the theme of the competition; The Human Face of Ramadan.

Entries can depict Ramadan’s spirituality, generosity, spirit of sharing, gathering, divers Muslims’ traditions and cultures during Ramadan which all fall within the OIC’s objectives of promoting Islamic solidarity, brotherhood and cultural awareness.

Prize: 6 winners with 6 best photographs will be sponsored for Hajj pilgrimage.

Eligibility: Open to all citizens of an OIC member state aged 18 and above.

Award

  • The 6 winners with 6 best photographs will be sponsored for Hajj pilgrimage.
  • The prize is transferable to another person nominated by the winner.
  • If a winner is suspected to have committed fraud in the process of winning the competition, his/her winning slot will be awarded to the runner up in the competition.

Selection:

  • The pictures will be published on OIC website and social Media platforms throughout the month of Ramadan.
  • OIC special jury will then select 6 winners 2 weeks after the close of the competition using specific criteria and the winners will be announced on OIC website 3-4 weeks after the close of the competition.

How to enter the contest?

To enter the competition, simply upload a picture taken during the 1437 Ramadan fast depicting the Human Face of Ramadan. Including your name, age, location, date of the picture, tittle and a short caption. Only non-professional photographers with keen eye and creative mind are eligible to participate. Pictures entered for other competitions are not eligible. The competition closes on 30th Ramadan 1437.

Entries received after this date will not be considered. Competitors must also like or follow OIC Social Media Platforms.

How to submit my photos?

  • You can submit your photos on OIC website only and by filling the form below. For practical reasons, the upload process will not accept images greater than 7 MB.
  • Please ensure it is in JPEG format. OIC cannot be held responsible for problems associated with entry submission. Describe the view and location of the image so we can verify its authenticity and eligibility for the competition. (Languages: Arabic, English and French).

Bakwa Magazine Short Story Competition 2016 for Cameroonians (FCFA 150,000 Prize)

Bakwa magazine, the leading online literary and cultural magazine in English in Cameroon, which has been at the forefront of cross-cultural exchange, intends to celebrate emerging writers from Cameroon by giving them the opportunity to submit stories which, inasmuch as embrace realism, also highlight fantasy, science fiction, magic realism, romance, epic, political allegory and satire.

This is a one-off short story competition for Cameroonians residing in Cameroon or elsewhere in the world, who are 39 years and below.

Entries can be in either English or French and should be between 3000 – 5000 words. The winner will receive FCFA 100,000, while the runner-up will receive FCFA 50,000. The best stories submitted for the competition will subsequently be published in an anthology in 2017. A series of post-competition events will include writing workshops, readings and a number of translation projects.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • This competition is open to Cameroonians between the ages of 18 – 39, who live in Cameroon or elsewhere.
  • Entries may be in English or French.
  • Stories must be unpublished.
  • Stories should range between 3000 – 5000 words and the only acceptable formats include PDF and Word (.doc and .docx) files.

Prize Details

  • The judging process will be anonymous. The prize administrators will make sure that all personal information is removed before sending the stories to the judges.
  • A shortlist of six stories will be selected in September, from which a winner and runner-up will be chosen.

Worth

  • Each scholarship is valued at £25,500 in total, funded by Cultures of Resistance and the SOAS Students’ Union. Fees will be deducted from this amount and the remainder will be used toward maintenance.

The MasterCard Foundation Fund for Rural Prosperity is a $50 million challenge fund to extend financial services to people living in poverty.

The innovation competition seeks applications from organisations aiming to design, pilot, test, and launch new financial products and services that can effectively meet the financing needs of people living in poverty in rural and agricultural areas.

The Innovation Competition seeks proposals for a new financial product, service or process that will increase access to finance for rural poor people. Mastercard Foundation hopes to harness the creativity of the private sector to facilitate increased financial access for underserved markets and financially excluded people living in rural and agricultural areas in Africa.

The Innovation Competition is open to project proposals where implementation will take place in the following countries:

Eligibility Requirements:

The MasterCard Foundation Fund for Rural Prosperity will only support ideas from institutions looking to deliver a financial service, product or process to rural poor people in an eligible African country (see list of countries above).

Projects may be proposed by a single institution or by a partnership of two or more of them (which could include a non-governmental organization); however, the proposal must be made by one company acting as the lead organization.

Firms that apply should have an established and verifiable institutional track record. The Fund will only consider start-ups in exceptional circumstances where there is strong evidence that the new company has credible and experienced investors and management team.

Firms that apply should have transparent ownership and governance structures.

Examples of institutions that are eligible include:

  • Banks;
  • Non-bank financial institutions such as insurance or leasing companies;
  • Agribusinesses that provide a financial service or that partner with a financial institution to deliver a financial service to their supply chain;
  • Firms that use mobile or IT technology to support the delivery of financial services to rural poor people; and
  • Firms that provide a non-financial service designed to facilitate increased access to financial services for financially excluded rural poor people. These firms may apply on their own as a lead applicant or may apply in partnership with a financial institution or agribusiness.

Summary of Eligibility Criteria

Eligible projects under The MasterCard Foundation Fund for Rural Prosperity must meet the following criteria:

  • The proposal must be for a project within an institution.
  • Projects may be proposed by a single institution or by a partnership of two or more of them (which could include a non-governmental organization); however, the proposal must be made by one company acting as the lead organization.
  • Projects for the Innovation Competition must take place in one of the countries listed as eligible for the Innovation Competition.
  • Projects in the Scaling Competition must take place in one of the eight core countries eligible for that competition.
  • Projects must demonstrate the potential to increase the provision of financial services to financially excluded poor people in rural areas of eligible countries.
  • Applications made to the Innovation Competition should be for support of between US$250,000 and US$1,000,000. For the Scaling Competition, applications should be for support of between US$750,000 and US$2,500,000.

2016 New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships 2016 for postgraduate study (Masters and PhD) in New Zealand Universities (Fully Funded)

As part of the CSFP programme, New Zealand offers New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships to candidates from developing Commonwealth countries for postgraduate study (Masters and PhD) in New Zealand universities on a contestable basis. New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships are highly competitive and for top level graduates.

New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships are funded by the New Zealand Aid Programme and managed and managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT). The selection process in New Zealand is managed by Universities New Zealand.

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is an international programme under which member governments offer scholarships and fellowships to citizens of other Commonwealth countries.

The CSFP was established at the first Commonwealth education conference in 1959 and is reviewed by education ministers at their triennial meetings. The CSFP is the only scholarship scheme in the world to receive such high-level recognition.

Qualification types

New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships are available for the following postgraduate qualifications:

  • Masters Degree (1 – 2 years)
  • PhD (up to 3.5 years)

New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships

Universities New Zealand is managing the application and selection process for the New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships:

– applications in 2016 for tenure from 2017.

Scholarships may be held at one of the eight universities in New Zealand:

Step Four: Apply for a New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarship

Please submit your completed application to the Nominating Agency in your home country, including your offer of place. Failure to do so will result in your application being deemed ineligible. It is important to note that applications sent directly to MFAT or Universities New Zealand will be deemed ineligible.

The Nominating Agency in your country will then nominate the two strongest applications to be forwarded to Universities New Zealand to be assessed against all other nominated New Zealand Commonwealth applications from across the Commonwealth.

Documentation required

When submitting your New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarship application to your local Nominating Agency you must attach the following official documentation:

1. One of the following:

  • Verified copy of passport
  • Verified copy of birth certificate
  • Verified copy of other official government issued ID

2. Copy of Offer of Place from New Zealand institution

3. Verified copies of relevant academic transcripts

4. Verified copies of relevant completion certificates

5. Contact details of most recent employer and two most relevant other employers

6. A non-verified copy of an IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) which will be verified by MFAT online using the TRF Verification Service OR An original copy of a TOEFL test result form.  Whichever is provided it must have been completed in the last 24 months.

2016 New Zealand Africa Development Scholarships for Study in New Zealand (fully Funded)

The New Zealand Aid Programme offers scholarships to people from eligible African countries who are motivated to make a difference at home.

In 2016 New Zealand Development Scholarships applications can be made online from 1st February 2016. Applications close on 30th April 2016. Any eligible country can apply online.

Qualification types

New Zealand Development Scholarships are available for the following qualifications:

  • Postgraduate Certificate (6 months)
  • Postgraduate Diploma (1 year)
  • Masters Degree (1 – 2 years)
  • PhD (up to 3.5 years)

Eligibility

Candidates must meet all the scholarship eligibility criteria including:

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of commencing your scholarship.
  • Be a citizen of the country from which you are applying for a scholarship and have resided in that country for at least the last two years.
  • Agree to return to your home country for a minimum of two years on completion of the scholarship.

Eligible countries in Africa include: Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Preferences

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate strong academic ability, leadership qualities, and a commitment to the development of their home country.

Preference is also given to candidates who are 39 years of age or younger at the time of commencing their scholarship.

Preference will be given to candidates who apply to study in academic disciplines relating to one or more of the following:

Agriculture development

  • Agri-business management, agricultural economics, agricultural systems and management, rural development, domestic supply chains and distribution, Natural Resource and Environmental Management
  • Biology, vegetable production, livestock/animal husbandry, crop management, sericulture (silk production), forestry, fisheries, aquaculture, agricultural pest management
  • Phytosanitary, bio-security, biotechnology, agricultural trade,
  • Food production, food sciences/technology, post-harvest processing, food storage and packaging, food safety

Scholarship Worth:

  • Economy class air ticket for me by the most direct and economical air travel route between an international airport in my home country nominated by MFAT and an airport in New Zealand close to the Education Institution
  • Airport reception and accommodation on arrival;
  • Establishment allowance;
  • A stipend to meet basic living expenses for the duration of my scholarship;
  • Full cost of tuition fees including compulsory enrolment, orientation and student union fees (course-related costs are excluded);
  • A return, standard economy class air ticket if I am eligible for reunion travel or home leave entitlements (as determined by MFAT)
  • insurance which includes health care and travel cover;
  • For PhD awardees and Masters awardees where research comprises 120 credits or more of the Masters programme and as authorised by MFAT; a research and thesis allowance, and provision for overseas fieldwork travel to the home country; and

Please submit your application to your nearest New Zealand Embassy or High Commission so that it arrives by the final closing date of 15 April 2016.

The Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) was established in 1983 under the Lomé Convention between the ACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific) Group of States and the European Union Member States.   • CTA look for a motivated and dynamic blogger or journalist interested in policy development issues with a focus on trade and agribusiness between the EU and the African, Caribbean and Pacific States (ACP)

OFID is pleased to announce that qualified applicants who have obtained or are on the verge of completing their undergraduate degree and who wish to study for a Master’s degree are welcome to apply for the OFID Scholarship 2016/2017.

OFID scholarships will be awarded to four students or candidates for master’s degree studies. Applicants must be from a developing country (except OFID Member Countries), and he/she must first obtain admission to pursue a Master’s degree studies in a relevant field of development, from any recognized university/college in the world.

Through its scholarship scheme, OFID aims to help highly motivated, highly driven individuals overcome one of the biggest challenges to their careers – the cost of graduate studies.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be between the ages of 23-32 at the time of submitting his/her application.
  • Must have obtained or be on the verge of completing their undergraduate degree with a Baccalaureate from an accredited college/university, or its equivalent.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 rating system, or its equivalent.

The OWSD Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women Scientists from Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDC) at Centres of Excellence in the South. The Fellowship is offered to women scientists to pursue postgraduate research in a field of the natural sciences.

This fellowship programme is for female students from Sub-Saharan Africa or Least Developed Countries (LDCs) who wish to pursue postgraduate training leading to a doctorate degree at a centre of excellence in the South outside their own country.

With funds generously provided by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), OWSD has instituted a fellowship programme for female students from Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), who wish to pursue postgraduate training leading to a PhD, at centres of excellence in the South (developing countries), outside their own country.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Open to qualified women science graduates from countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (see list below).
  • If applicants are over 40 years of age, they should include a brief explanation of why their research career has been delayed.
  • The minimum qualification is an MSc degree (or equivalent), or an outstanding BSc honours degree in the natural sciences, engineering or information technology disciplines (see list below).
  • Host institutions must be located in a developing country. This must be a different country from the applicant’s home country.
  • Applicants must provide a preliminary acceptance letter from at least one host institute. The letter must be prepared based on the sample on page 10 and be signed by the head of department, potential host supervisor or postgraduate studies coordinator.
  • The application will be evaluated more favourably if the preliminary acceptance letter is supported by a letter of commitment from the prospective host supervisor, describing why the host institute is appropriate for the subject of study and confirming the supervisor’s interest in working with the student.
  • Students from eligible countries already enrolled on a PhD programme in their home country can apply for the sandwich option. This gives them access to expertise and resources that might not be available at the home institute.
  • Applicants already on site in the host country will not be considered eligible since this implies that they have already secured sufficient funding for their studies.
  • The applicant must be willing to return to her own country after completion of the fellowship.
  • Accompanying persons are not eligible for support.

Fellowship Worth:

  • Study fees (including tuition and registration fees);
  • Visa expenses;
  • A yearly medical insurance contribution;
  • A lump sum allowance to attend international conferences during the period of the fellowship;
  • On a competitive basis, attending of scientific communication and proposal writing workshop; and
  • On a competitive basis, attending the Fifth OWSD General Assembly and International Conference scheduled for 2016.

The U.S. Department of State and IREX announce an open competition for a program that will bring outstanding secondary-level school teachers to the U.S. for a professional development opportunity.
TEA seeks to:
• Enhance teachers’ expertise in their teaching discipline and equip them with a deeper understanding of best practices in teaching methods, lesson planning, and instructional technology.
• Create among educators a more nuanced understanding of the U.S.
• Develop productive and lasting relationships and mutual understanding between
U.S. and international teachers and their students.
• Contribute to improving teaching in participating countries and communities by preparing participants to serve as teacher leaders who, upon returning home, will apply and share
their experience and skills with their peers and students.
ELIGIBLE TEACHING DISCIPLINES FOR TEA ARE:
• English or English as a Foreign Language
• Social Studies (social studies, civics, history, geography, etc.)

• Science
• Special Education teachers in the disciplines listed above
The Teaching Excellence and Achievement (TEA) Program provides international teachers with unique opportunities to develop expertise in their subject areas, enhance their teaching skills, and increase their knowledge about the United States. TEA consists of a six-week non-degree, non-credit customized academic program including seminars on new teaching methodologies, curriculum development, lesson planning , and instructional technology.
Participants will also take part in a practicum in a U.S. secondary school near their
host university to work closely with U.S. teachers and teach and present to U.S. students. Cultural enrichment, mentoring, and support will be provided throughout the program. The international participants will travel to the United States in two cohorts of approximately 80 teachers each in the spring or fall 2017.
Upon returning home, TEA program alumni are eligible to apply for small grants for essential teaching materials, follow-on training for other teachers, collaborative projects between schools in their home country and the United States, and other activities that build on their U.S. experience.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Eligibility

Eligible applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be current secondary school-level, full-time teachers in a school that serves a primarily local (not expatriate) population;
• Have five or more years of classroom experience in TEA teaching disciplines: English, EFL, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, or special education;

Fellowship Worth:

Budding entrepreneurs across Africa can now apply to join the second annual Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme (TEEP) for start-up businesses based in Africa.

Applications for 2016 open on 1 January and can be made by any for-profit business based in Africa, including new business ideas which have been in existence for less than three years.

The Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme (TEEP)  a 12-week programme to equip startups with the basic skills required to launch and run their businesses at the early stage of their growth.The programme will bring together the best tools and frameworks to teach and hone entrepreneurship skills in Africa and globally.

The Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme #TEEP, a Pan-African entrepreneurship initiative of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, is a multi-year programme of training, funding, and mentoring, designed to empower the next generation of African entrepreneurs.

The programme will be a mix of online and face-to-face instruction, including webinars and video tutorials with support from your mentor throughout. It will cover topics on starting and scaling a business, business development, marketing strategy, effective management and product design.

Requirements:

The Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Programme is open to citizens and legal residents of all 54 African countries.

Benefits:

Successful applicants who complete the programme will receive the local currency equivalent of Naira 850,000 as non-returnable seed capital, and are eligible for a further Naira 850,000 in the form of either debt or equity, depending on business need and other criteria.

Selected entrepreneurs will join the existing cohort of 1,000 Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurs, from 51 countries, who formed the inaugural 2015 cycle of the TEEP programme and have thus far, received considerable benefits from their participation, including:

  • Training: 12 weeks of training on how to set up and manage businesses with mentoring and financial support offered by The Tony Elumelu Foundation.
  • Accelerated Growth: Over 90% of Tony Elumelu entrepreneurs, with existing businesses, have reported increased growth in the past year.
  • Access to Further Funding: A significant portion of our entrepreneurs have accessed additional external funding through the platform provided by Tony Elumelu Foundation.
  • Networking Opportunities: A flourishing alumni network has developed, providing personal linkages and business opportunities across the Continent.

TEEP is a commitment by the Tony Elumelu Foundation to identify and fund 10,000 African entrepreneurs over a 10-year period.

The African Institute Of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) provides scholarships to all students, ensuring that an inability to pay is not a barrier to enrolling on the AIMS Masters program

Taught by top international and local lecturers, the programme is supported throughout by tutors who work closely with the lecturers and students. The programme material is purposefully broad, allowing students to learn about a wide spectrum of mathematical topics and their applications before focusing on a specialised topic for their research project.

For the 2016-17 academic year, AIMS will offer the AIMS Master’s Degree at AIMS Cameroon, AIMS Ghana, AIMS Sénégal, AIMS South Africa, AIMS Tanzania and AIMS Rwanda.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The programme is currently open to students of African nationality.
  • Applicants should hold, or anticipate completing by the start date of the AIMS course, a 4-year university degree in mathematics, or any science or engineering subject with a significant mathematics component.
  • An applicant’s record should demonstrate strong aptitude in mathematics, leadership and community service
  • Women applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Government of India is offering the Africa Scholarship through Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) under Africa Scholarship Scheme for Undergraduate, Postgraduate, M. Phil./Ph.D and Post-Doctoral Fellowship in various Indian Universities/Institutes.

At the inaugural plenary of the India – Africa Forum Summit held in New Delhi in April 2008, the Honorable Prime Minister of India announced the Government of India’s initiative to enhance the academic opportunities for students of African countries in India by increasing the number of scholarships for them to pursue under-graduate, post-graduate and higher courses.
The ICCR implements this scheme on behalf of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Under this Scheme, the Council offers 900 scholarships to the following countries:

Benefits:

  •  The selected candidates would be provided with return economy class air fares to the nearest international airport and Air-Conditioned III Train fare to the place of study, if so required.
  • The selected students will be paid living allowance, contingent grant, house rent allowance and thesis expenses, as admissible under the rules of the ICCR.
  • Air ticket for journey from Home Country to India will be provided by the Embassy and return ticket will be provided to the scholar in India.

2016/2017 Brunei Darussalam Government Scholarships to Foreign Students (Fully Funded)

 The Government of Brunei Darussalam is offering annual scholarships under a special scholarship award scheme, for the 2016/2017 academic session. Tenable in Brunei Darussalam, the aim of the scholarship awards is to provide applicants, with the opportunity to study at University of Brunei Darussalam [UBD], Islam Sultan Sharif Ali university [UNISSA] and Brunei Institute of Technology [ITB].

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be citizens of ASEAN, OIC, Commonwealth Member Countries and others are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be between the ages of 18 – 25 for undergraduate programmes and not exceed 35 for postgraduate programmes on the 31 July 2016.
  • The award is not eligible, to Brunei Permanent Residents and foreigners residing in Brunei Darussalam.

Scholarship Worth:

The scholars are exempted from paying tuition fees and other appropriate compulsory fees as determined by the university for the duration of the programme.

  • One return economy class air-ticket for the most economically viable route to Brunei Darussalam will be determined by the Brunei Darussalam Government. No additional assistance will be provided towards other travel expenses.

Allowances payable will include:

  • Monthly personal allowance of BND500.00
  • Annual Book Allowance BND600.00
  • Monthly food allowance of BND150.00
  • Upon completion of the program, Baggage allowance to a maximum institution of BND250.00 to ASEAN region and BND500.00 to non ASEAN region.
  • An accommodation at respective institution residential college is provided. If the scholar opts not to live in the provided accommodation, no additional allowance will be given in the lieu of board and transport
  • Outpatient medical and/or dental treatment is at any Brunei government hospitals, However an administrative charge is payable for each consultation with the government general practitioner or specialist.
  • Should the scholar seek further medical or dental treatments at any private hospital or clinic, all expenses are to be borne by scholars themselves.
